TATCHA GOLD Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm Review

Purchased by me (Affiliate links)

As previously noted, I purchased one of the few remaining TATCHA GOLD Camellia Nourishing Lip Balms when I attended The Beauty Event at Barneys New York at The Grove in Los Angeles that featured TATCHA and Surratt. I had been wanting to purchase this museum worthy beauty for some time, but could no longer resist its gold leaf-laden charms.  I must confess that it is so uncharacteristically beautiful for a lip balm that it took me many days of coaxing myself before I was able to pierce the lovely surface with my finger. I felt as though I was touching a medieval altarpiece while a guard turned away at a museum, and that I would surely be caught and hauled away! Once I worked up the courage, there was no turning back-- and this beauty is every bit as amazingly effect and pleasant as it is beautiful. I should also mention that Kyoko Getz used this luxury lip balm on me during my truly amazing TATCHA facial at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills.
According to TATCHA,

This intensely hydrating lip balm absorbs quickly and smoothly, leaving lips soft and touchable. The 24-karat gold leaf crushes upon application. Hand-laid 24-karat gold leaf adds a touch of sensual shimmer. Ideal for all skin types.
This clear lip balm has a remarkable gel consistency that feels at once indescribably comfortable and comforting on the lips. It boasts the perfect amount of cushion as it spreads effortlessly across the lips, and might be likened in texture to an emollient lip gloss and a very moisturizing lip balm. Upon first application it has a medium glossy finish, but once it is largely absorbed it results in a lower shine finish-- making it perfect for men and women. Naturally the first dozen uses offer an ethereal golden glint courtesy of the delightfully decadent gold leaf, but once it wears away it is simply a clear balm.

As one might guess from the nourishing list of ingredients, GOLD Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm is remarkably hydrating and nourishing, and has the ability to render parched lips utterly soft and smooth with little coaxing. I tried it on chapped lips, and was delighted that it delivered relief instantly. My lips were quickly transformed from dry to supple, and as such this makes a miraculous base for dry lipstick formulas. In fact, it makes an extraordinary base for all lipstick formulas. It can be used day or night, and once you try it you may be inclined to over-use it, as do I!

While I have far more lip balms than any reasonable person could ever use or need, trust me when I say that this one immediately soared to the top of my must-have list. When efficacy, beauty and a delightful visceral experience while using a product merge so elegantly-- it is hard not to reach for it repeatedly. This is luxury skincare of the highest order!
Ingredients: Squalane (Olive Origin), Dimer Dilinoleyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Dextrin Palmitate, Fragrance (Natural), Dextrin Palmitate/Ethylhexanoate, Polyglyceryl-10 Pentaisostearate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Oil, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Water, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate (Licorice Extract), Oryzanol (Rice Bran Oil Extract), Hydrogenated Lecithin (Soy Origin), Inositol (Rice Extract), Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Alcohol, Glycerin, Algae Extract, Gold.

FORMULATED WITHOUT: Mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, PEGs, PPGs, DEA, TEA, urea or phthalates.
Overall assessment: While the packaging is extraordinarily beautiful and elegant, the true wonder is in how well TATCHA GOLD Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm performs. That said, something that is so gorgeous and effective is even more satisfying to use. The visceral experience of rubbing this remarkable lip balm into your lips is utterly joyful. This product has earned a resounding A+, in my opinion!

  1. That sounds really impressive, I'm not sure that we have that brand in the uk. Its good that it doesn't contain mineral oil, that seems to be in so many lip balms these days

    1. Hi Chia-Yi, I only wait a couple of seconds because I only pat a small amount into my lips-- just enough to give them a moisturizing coat, but not enough to interfere with my lipstick. I find that it works really well that way. :-)

    2. if you had to choose between this and the hourglass treatment oil, which one would you choose?

    4. Wow, that's a super tough question. I guess that it really depends on what you are looking for. For me, I consider them so different that it's too difficult to compare them apples to apples. I think of the Hourglass oil as belonging to the luxury oil category rather than to a true lip balm category. Most often I apply it at night before I go to bed these days-- and think of it as a serum, but of course it can be used at any time of the day (and I have used it at all hours). The TATCHA, on the other hand, is a true lip balm-- albeit a fabulous one. I wouldn't want to be forced to choose one over the other since I love and use both. THat said, I think that your choice should be made based upon what you hope to achieve. Are you just looking for a lip balm or an oil? If there is any way that you can sample them first, I would suggest it. I really think that both are amazing products! :D
