Tom Ford Lip Color Sheer: In The Buff, Pink Dune & Summer Fling Review and Swatches

 Purchased by me (Affiliate Links)

As anticipated the new Tom Ford Lip Color Sheers from the Spring 2014 (Limited Edition) have been flying off of the virtual and actual shelves since the launch, and while many will scoff at the hefty price tag-- devotees to the line are not dissuaded from the purchase. I was tempted by In The Buff, Pink Dune & Summer Fling, and am very pleased with the purchase. Of course I belong to the category of the latter rather than the former as my large stash of Tom Ford Lipsticks will attest-- so I didn't hesitate in purchasing a few before they were gone.

Harmonizing sensuous shades of shimmering nudes and hot, vivid colors, the limited edition Tom Ford Sheer Collection delivers an irresistible effect that complements sun-kissed, Summer skin. A decadent mix of shea butter and vitamins C and E helps lavish the lips with saturated moisture. The distinct, beveled Lip Color Sheer bullet is packaged in a retro-chic, ivory- and gold-colored Tom Ford Case.
The formula itself resides somewhere between Tom Ford Lip Color Lipsticks and Tom Ford Lip Color Shines. They aren't as sheer as the Lip Color Shines, but they aren't as opaque as the regular Lip Color Lipsticks. They offer a certain translucency that allows your lips to show through, and they boast a beautiful sheen. They are very comfortable on the lips offering the perfect amount of slip and cushion. I find the formula moisturizing, and even after the color has worn away (about 3-4 hours later on me) my lips remain comfortably hydrated. They have the same vanilla scent associated with Tom Ford Lip products, but I detect no taste.

Left to Right:  In The Buff (beige peach shade), Pink Dune (peachy pink with gold shimmer) and Summer Fling (light warm pink with golden shimmer).
In The Buff, Pink Dune, Summer Fling and Le Métier de Beauté Color Core Moisture Stain Lipstick in Palm Springs (reviewed here). I wanted to compare Summer Fling with Palm Springs because both are pinks with refined golden pearl, and while they are close Palm Springs remains a cooler toned variant.

  1. Summer Fling has to be my favorite here! I'm surprised that these actually last 3-4 hours, since they seem sheer in the swatches. I've been fooled before tho! Glad to hear they're awesome!

    1. Mine too! I was pretty surprised that they lasted that long on me as well. I don't know if that is an anomaly or if everyone is getting that much wear-time. They seem sheer in the swatches because I chose three of the very least pigmented shades-- the darker shades are much more pigmented. I'm really happy with the formula-- it's a nice balance between his other two formulas.

  2. These are lovely, especially on the pictures. I got two myself, Summer Fling and Paradiso, love the shades and the fact that they are not as thick as TF's balms, but... I experienced some drying on my lips after using them :-( my test is ongoing but it is very interesting because nothing dried my lips, really, ever... I might have sensitivity to one of the ingredients, don't know. Thanks very much for the review though...

    1. You chose such pretty colors!! I'm so sorry to hear that you experienced some drying! I haven't had that happen-- I wonder if it is a sensitivity to one or more of the ingredients. What happens if you apply them on top of a lip balm?

    2. The shades are so lovely, it breaks my heart after lips are so dry... Thanks, I will try it with a lip balm, which I don't have and first have to buy lol, because my lips are never dry ;-)

    3. That's an awful lot to spend on them if they dry out your lips! If the lip balm doesn't work can you return them, or are they strict about returns in Germany? If you are allergic to an ingredient you shouldn't be stuck with them!

  3. I can't wait until payday so I can buy myself some of these beauties, so far I definitely want Summer Fling, & Pink Dune. I'm liking the look of in the buff but wonder if it would be a touch too warm..decisions..decisions.. :)

    1. Hi Clare! I know what you mean! Summer Fling is definitely worth getting. Pink Dune and In the Buff are close enough that you really don't need both, and of the two I think that you would prefer Pink Dune. However, if you have to pick one-- I would make it Summer Fling. If there is any way to see them first, I would.

  4. I couldn't wait since I was afraid they'd be sold out. I just got Pink Dune and Summer Fling in the mail and can't wait to photograph them and try them.

  6. Why does TF make so many things I want to buy! I'm not sure any of these would work for my pigmented pout but they sure are covetable!

    1. Hi Erin! That is the same question that I ask myself repeatedly!!!!!! You might find all of the shades that I bought to be underwhelming for pigmented lips, but I suspect that you would be pleased with the more pigmented shades!

  7. I got Firecarcker and it's nowhere near sheer. I love it because it's a bright red orange lipstick

    1. Hi Chia-Yi! Summer Fling is just my type of color as well. There is no question that the TF lipsticks come with a premium price tag! I fear how much more I would be tempted to buy if the price tag was lower!
