Getting Nude with Tom Ford: Lascivious or Subdued Lips? In the Buff, Nude Vanilla, Vanilla Suede, Naked & Bare Swatches & Review!

Purchased by me (Affiliate Links)

Tom Ford really does know how to make exceptional quality luxurious lipsticks, hybrids and glosses. The best thing that I can say to you if you are among the many to scoff at price is to avoid them like the plague. That is precisely what I did for a long time, and then one day I let my curiosity get the better of me, and down the rabbit hole I went.

Tom Ford Offers a formidable selection of nudes in nearly every hue, but here are a few of my favorites.
Left to Right: In the Buff, Nude Vanilla, Vanilla Suede, Bare, and Naked

Lip Color Sheer In the Buff is a stunning beige peach.
Lip Color in Nude Vanilla is a gorgeous a pale nude peachy pink (one of my very favorite lipsticks).
Lip Color in Vanilla Suede is a glimmering pale peachy beige with gorgeous golden pearl.
Lip Color Shine in Bare is a nude peachy beige with gorgeous peachy golden shimmer.
Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Naked a nude beige peachy pink with refined golden shimmer.
Lip Color Sheer In the Buff ($49.00) (Available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman). Shown on the far left, this is one lovely moisturizing lipstick. I love the way it looks and feels, and only wish that the Lip Color Sheers would add more colors and become part of the permanent collection.

The formula itself resides somewhere between Tom Ford Lip Color Lipsticks and Tom Ford Lip Color Shines. They aren't as sheer as the Lip Color Shines, but they aren't as opaque as the regular Lip Color Lipsticks. They offer a certain translucency that allows your lips to show through, and they boast a beautiful sheen. They are very comfortable on the lips offering the perfect amount of slip and cushion. I find the formula moisturizing, and even after the color has worn away (about 3-4 hours later on me) my lips remain comfortably hydrated. They have the same vanilla scent associated with Tom Ford Lip products, but I detect no taste.

Harmonizing sensuous shades of shimmering nudes and hot, vivid colors, the limited edition Tom Ford Sheer Collection delivers an irresistible effect that complements sun-kissed, Summer skin. A decadent mix of shea butter and vitamins C and E helps lavish the lips with saturated moisture. The distinct, beveled Lip Color Sheer bullet is packaged in a retro-chic, ivory- and gold-colored Tom Ford Case.
Lip Color in Nude Vanilla ($49.00) Available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman. Shown second from the left, Nude Vanilla is one those lipsticks that possesses a chameleon-like effect because of its ability to melt into the lips and morph into a color that differs a bit from the tube. On me it becomes a flattering warm pale pink, and one that I thought would look hideous on me. However, at the urging of my friend Michelle (Tom Ford SA at Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills) I applied it and waited a few minutes for it to melt into my lips, and voilà the most gorgeous hue emerged!

To Tom Ford, there is no more dramatic accessory than a perfect lip. It is the focus of the face and it has the power to define a woman's whole look. Each lip color is Tom Ford's modern ideal of an essential makeup shade. Rare and exotic ingredients, including soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil, create an ultra-creamy texture with an incredibly smooth application. Specially treated pigments are blended to deliver pure color with just the right balance of luminosity.
Lip Color in Vanilla Suede ($49.00) Available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman. Shown in the center, Vanilla Suede is an interesting shade. At first this very pale glimmering pale peachy beige with golden pearl looks as though it will be too pale to be in the least bit flattering, but like Nude Vanilla once it warms up it seems to adapt to its environment and become a glistening golden nude. It also makes a stunning base for other lipsticks, hybrids, and glosses because of its inherent ability to add dimension when layered with other products.

Lip Color Shine in Bare ($48.00) Available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman. Second from the right, Bare is one of those hybrid lip products that has the comfort  and moisturizing properties of a fabulous lip balm, but combines the wear of a lipstick with that of a lip gloss. It glides on the lips effortlessly and offers gorgeous color and twinkling pearl suspended in a luminous shiny formula. I avoided buying this for a very long time because I found it to be rather cost prohibitive given that there are so many high quality luxury hybrid lip products on the market for a fraction of the price, and I regret to inform you that this one ended up being my very favorite! I had hoped not to love it.

For Tom Ford, lips can be a woman's most alluring feature. Tom Ford Lip Color Shine envelops the lips in a semitransparent, high-shine color veil. Each sensuous and delicate shade glides on with a luminous sheen, instantly moisturizing and conditioning the lips.

Developed with the rare and exotic ingredients—soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter, and chamomilla flower oil—the Tom Ford Lip Color Shine conditions, moisturizes, and delivers a color with lustrous shine.
Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Naked ($45.00) Available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman. Shown at the far right, Naked is a stunning a nude beige peachy pink with refined golden shimmer that is sure to make lip gloss lovers swoon.

The Ultra Shine Lip Gloss has a delightful vanilla scent that is not overpowering, and it does fade rather quickly. The texture of the gloss is quite thick and rich lending itself to opaque coverage- though it can be sheered out. The texture is almost a touch sticky, but not quite- just this side to assure that it is long-wearing by typical lip gloss standards. It actually feels a bit more like a liquid lipstick than a lip gloss, and I find that I get several hours of wear out of a single application. The high shine finish is lush and elegant without being overdone.

A high-shine, color-saturated gloss designed to achieve bold and glamorous lips. Its smooth and creamy texture has high adherence and easy comfort. It can be worn alone or layered over Tom Ford Lip Color to add dimension to the lips.

Overall assessment: Dearest Mr. Ford, or may I call you Tom since I do get nude with you with great frequency? How is it that you have cracked the code on the perfect way to go nude? How is it that I am perpetually left in a state of eager anticipation for each new nude moment that you create? You will surely be my undoing since I have a ravenous appetite for the things that you create. I take your bullets everywhere that I go, and with them I am armed to deal with any curve balls thrown my way. From your hands to my lips: your lip products have burrowed their way to my most coveted holy grail collection that I never save for a special occasion. Instead, I proudly adorn my lips with your magical creations daily-- thereby making the everyday a special occasion. Thank you for the intoxicating vanilla scented lip products that cause me to continually luxuriate in their magnificence. I bow to thee.

  1. When I first saw TF's nudes on various blogs, I wasn't particularly impressed. Face it, at my age I've seen nudes come and go---multiple times! Also, at my age, a nude shade usually isn't particularly attractive. A bit of color is necessary to enliven my look. So, when a TF makeup artist suggested Nude Vanille to me, I was very dubious unatil he applied it. He said, "I can tell you're a sixties kind of woman. You're all about the eyes and a barely there lip and cheek. You're going to love this. Promise!" And, he was right. It was instant love. If I really wanted to do something retro, I'd use Bare, but seeing as I really need some color on my lips which actually have a lot of color of their own, I opt for Nude Vanille. As for the cost of a TF lipstick, hopefully by this time everyone has gotten over the price points for Tom Ford products. It is what it is--luxuary brand and it is priced accordingly. But, oh, what a luxury brand! I love Tom ford.

That's a wonderful collection of nude shades you've acquired. Enjoy them while you're young enough to wear them without looking like death warmed over ;-) LOL

    1. As always, perfectly stated, Eileen! I had the same type of experience with Nude Vanilla, and I only agreed to try it because Michelle assured me that I would be stunned by how good it would look on me. Like you, I was very dubious-- but wow, was she ever right.

I love Tom Ford so much-- his well-edited collection is so stunning and yet so easy to wear.
      :-)

  2. Hello Lola
I was wondering what color your skin tone is since I love the look of both vanilla suede and nude vanilla but thought they'd look like concealer on me I am a b30 in chanel foundation if that helps
    Thank you

    1. Hi Melissa,

I am a cool-toned fair to medium olive. I can get quite dark, but am naturally more fair to medium. I don't have any Chanel foundations in my stash, but here are some of my shades for reference. I don't wear MAC foundations, but was once told that I am around an NC25.

Tom Ford: Pale Dune (Stick and Liquid)
      Armani Maestro: 5
Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation (old formula) PK-1 and PK-2 work
Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation 013
MAKE UP FOR EVER Face & Body #20
      Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup: Ivory
Le Metier de Beaute Peau Vierge: Shade 1
      NARS TInted Moisturizer: Alaska
Revlon Colorstay Whipped Foundation: 240 Natural Beige

My skin is kind of funny in that I have some flexibility between some warmer shades and those that are cooler. However, when you look at me it is quite clear that I have a cool skin tone (I am a Winter if you go by the 4 season color analysis). I have dark brown hair (though it lightens up quite a bit naturally during the warm months in Los Angeles) and hazel eyes. While I should ideally stick to cool and clear blue-based colors for my lips I have found a way to wear nude shades without looking like a walking corpse! :-)

  3. Hi Melissa,

I'm not currently using a Chanel foundation, but Chanel MA's invariably mix 020 Clair with a bit of 007 Ivoire when doing my makeup. I have naturally rosey lips and cheeks so when I tried the beige Vanilla Suede, it did look very lifeless on me--not like concealer, but boring. Nude Vanille, on the other hand, has enough pinky peach goodness to look warm and natural. It is still considerably lighter than the natural color of my lips but it is consistent with my overall coloring. At the end of the day, Vanilla Suede or Nude Vanille, it comes down to how much you like light lip colors and what kinds of lip colors you prefer in general. TF lipstick is richly pigmented so what you see is what you get. If you are uncertain about the retro look of pale nudes, you might want to take a look at TF's Pink Dusk. It is similar to Nude Vanille, but darker.

    1. SPOT ON analysis as always, Eileen! I wish that you would start a beauty blog! <3

    2. Thanks Helen, but I'm not sure how many younger women would be interested in advice or reviews from a 69 year old woman :-). You're a sweetheart, though, for suggesting it.

    3. I think that you would be surprised by how many people would read your blog irrespective of age (yours or theirs). What you offer is so valuable to all of the blogs that you read, and yours is a valuable voice in that community. I am hardly the only one who would read your blog on a daily basis. You have so much to say that nourishes so many readers, and you have your pulse on the best luxury lines from their offerings, to their artistry. I really think that you should give your voice a larger platform! :-)

    4. Hello Eileen,
I have to tell you my heart skipped a best when you replied I read BTIB and I always look for your input. If uou started a blog I'd be there daily to see what your saying . I love your advice to everyone you talk to. Thank you both . I am a 5.5 in Maestro and I have brown hair and eyes and am Arabic but some pales do not look good on me. Lmdb Miami looks awful on me but I love the color so if these aren't like that I am all for it. I just started adding to my TF stash and got nubile & Casablanca I love them. I am a lipstick hoarder . Thank you both so much for answering you just made this first time stay at home moms day

    5. See Eileen, you would have many many followed, and trust me it wouldn't be just me and Melissa!<3

    6. Hi Melissa, It sounds as though we may have similar coloring. I could probably wear Maestro 5.5, but 5 is a pretty great fit. LMdB Miami isn't a great fit for me either, but I LOVE and wear Palm Springs a great deal. I think that you may have the same experience that Eileen and I have with Nude Vanilla, but it is a rather mod pale peachy pink. It does turn into a lovely nude pink on me. I also have and love Casablanca, and if that is more your comfort zone than paler nudes-- then you might try Pink Dusk as Eileen suggested. I have and love that one as well. I, too, am a lipstick hoarder-- and my Tom Ford stash is becoming frightening! Nubile is gorgeous, but the only one of the Shines that I have is Bare. Nude Vanilla not only morphs once it hits the warmth of your lips, but it is also a fantastic base color, or can be used to tone down or mix other colors. That said, I tend to use it the most straight from the tube, and it will most assuredly be the first of my Tom Ford lipsticks to be replaced! Congratulations on being a first time stay at home mom! Keep us posted-- I'd love to hear what you end up getting and what you think of it!<3

    7. Eileen!!! What about a guest post here? You could have lots of fun with it? I would be honored to have you, and I'm quite certain that everyone would be thrilled by whatever you did! Give it some thought and let me know what you think!

  4. Thank you so much I will order nude vanilla. I have 6 of the shines and would love to add bare and insidious as I have all the pinks. I saved enough money to get 3 more lipsticks from his main line and here are some picks I have on my list maybe you can tell me what you think? I have only 2 now and they are Spanish pink and sable smoke but they tend to show my lip lines and so I have to find a way to fix that. So my wish list is Indian rose, true coral, crimson noir , flamingo, violet fatal and or blush nude or nude vanilla. It's a long list I know but I can get 3 now and then add the rest later. Sorry for the long post but since you are a TF aficionado I thought you'd have some good suggestions

    1. My pleasure, Melissa! Wait, I'm confused-- I thought that you had Casablanca as well. You might prefer Blush Nude to Nude Vanilla since it has more color, and is more pink. I only have a few of the colors on your wish list (Nude Vanilla, Blush Nude and Indian Rose). Crimson Noir, Flamingo, Violet Fatal, and True Coral are so stunning. Since I have Bruised Plum and Black Orchid I didn't venture into the realm of the colors that you listed since I tend to wear nudes, lighter pinks, and then vampy shades on the more extreme end. I personally can't wear True Coral because my cool-toned skin looks sallow and sickly in such colors, but it is a really stunning shade! If there is any way for you to try those more vibrant colors in person it would be great. However, Karla Sugar has amazing swatches of all of those shades:

      http://karlasugar.net/2011/09/tom-ford-lipstick-2/

It sounds as though you are looking for a range of colors: nude, coral, red and pink-- so maybe it would be a sound idea to get one from 3 of the categories, Perhaps eliminating the category that you will wear the least, or that you have in abundance in your lipstick stash. At $49.00 a pop I tend to pick colors that I know that I will reach for often. Go with your gut instinct and get the colors that really speak to you and that you know that you will wear and enjoy the most. All of the colors on your wish list are fabulous, but the real question is which ones will earn their place in your makeup bag, and not collect dust in a makeup drawer!! Keep me posted! :-)

  5. Thank you for answering I honestly never was into make up and last year I had my son and went crazy. My husband thought it was better than bags and shoes until he saw how many collections come out bad hoe much I wanted lol. I do have Casablanca but it just came in the mail today I had ordered it. I think I'm going to get Indian rose, true coral & violet fatale as I have a lot of pinks and not much color compared to everyday kind if shades . I never wore color until I bought Until I bought burberry lipmist in blueberry and so how pretty and wearable they can be and then I went from there. Thank you so much for all your help. You are so nice to take the time to answer. Have a great weekend

    1. My pleasure, Melissa! Well, you certainly found the right lipsticks to covet!!! I'm right there with you! I think that you will love Casablanca so much, and will find it infinitely wearable with your coloring. I love wearing it alone or with my Surratt Automatic Lip Crayon in Mahogany

      http://www.lolassecretbeautyblog.com/2013/11/surratt-automatic-lip-crayon-in.html

I think that you will be really happy with Indian Rose, True Coral and Violet Fatale-- they are all so gorgeous.

I agree with you about the Burberry Lip Mist in Blueberry-- I have and love that one. You've reminded me to pull it out and use it more often, thanks!

Thank you for your very kind words-- it really is my pleasure to help in any way that I can! Keep me posted-- I want to know what you think of your new TF treasures when they arrive! You have a lovely weekend as well! :-)
