Beauty Box 5 December 2013 Box Review & Swatches

This month Beauty Box 5 decided to celebrate the modern woman by treating us to a little bit of everything from skincare to makeup products, and this box does not disappoint!

The NYX Cosmetics Love in Rio eyeshadow palette in Sway with Lola features a pink, brownish taupe and a sky blue shade.

Body Drench Daily Moisturizing Lotion in Sugar Cane, is a yummy smelling travel size lotion that is perfect for your handbag. The lotion absorbs quickly and leaves the skin soft and supple.

Ofra Cosmetics Lip Gloss Plumper in Sultry is a gorgeous vampy wine color that plumps your pout while moisturizing it. There is a slight tingling sensation as it plumps the lips, but I didn't find it unpleasant in the least. This one went straight into my hand bag!

Clean & Clear Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer is a hydrating oil free moisturizer with a refreshing herbal scent.

Every Beauty Flexible Foot Smoother is an amazingly effective way to smooth your winter feet before daring to reveal them in sandals! This ingenious tool is coarse on one side and very fine on the other, and its ability to bend allows it to conform to the shape of your foot-- making it a very efficient tool. When finished you simply wash it in hot water and let it dry before next use. I love this!

Beauty Box 5 a monthly beauty box subscription that costs $12.00 a month with free shipping. Each box contains 5 products that are a combination of full-sized and deluxe samples.

Overall assessment: Another wonderful box by Beauty Box 5. There was a nice assortment of products, and the three full size product (NYX Eyeshadow, Ofra Lip Plumper and Foot Smoother were alone worth double the cost of the box) alone were worth double the cost of the whole box.

My experience: As one who has a very difficult time finding a concealer that works well for me, I am delighted to say that Dr. Copeland's Ageless Skin Under Eye Concealer does a great job. It is moisturizing rather than drying, and it doesn't cake, flake or settle into fine lines. My skin is left taut and hydrated with a lovely smooth texture. It looks natural on the skin and has buildable coverage in the event that I have dark circles to conceal. I also love the silky smooth and creamy texture that lends itself to effortless blending. I love the fact that it is a antioxidant rich anti-aging formula-- which is a huge bonus considering the delicacy of the skin under the eyes.

Overall assessment: A definite winner in my book! The formula is just fantastic. I only wish that they had an expanded range of colors so that more people could enjoy this lovely concealer.

The texture of Rêve de Miel Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm is ultra thick and rich and unbelievably moisturizing. It is what I like to think of as a truly full-coverage lip balm because it really coats your lips and has amazing staying power. It feels amazing on the lips--offering relief to even the most chapped lips. The finish is matte-- which likely accounts for its ability to stay put once applied. Likewise, the matte finish makes for an extraordinary base for any lipstick-- and increases the wear-time of anything you put on your lips. This magical balm makes my lips so soft and supple that it has found a home on my nightstand. When I apply it at night there is still a very thin veil on my lips when I wake up, and my lips are plump and moisturized without fail. It really is incredible! The scent has a light and refreshing citrus flair, but there is no distinguishable taste once applied to the lips.

My experience: While Veil Fluid Makeup is described as having medium coverage, it is buildable. Therefore, those who prefer a more full coverage foundation do not have to miss out on the amazing benefits of this otherworldly foundation. Likewise, those who prefer a more sheer coverage can easily get their most desired level of coverage by adding a touch of primer or lotion to a pump of the this foundation, or simply by applying less product.

The Matrixyl® Synthe’6™works magic by encouraging the skin to produce more collagen-- thereby helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines. Skin appears soft and supple with visibly improved texture-- even after you remove your makeup at night. I have noticed that when I use Veil Fluid Makeup exclusively for a few weeks that my skin looks much better when I don't bother to wear makeup at all. The results are real, and while I don't have more than expression lines to contend with-- I have been asked repeatedly whether I had something like an in-office medical peel since my skin looks so rested, rejuvenated, youthful, and with a pronounced clarity.

Hourglass sent me No. 1 Ivory, which is described as a fair shade with pink undertones. While the arm swatch appears decidedly yellow-based against my cool-toned skin, trust me when I tell you that it morphs into the perfect shade once it warms up and melts into my skin a few minutes after application.

The formula itself is lusciously smooth and creamy and can be used with or without a primer. However, for the most amazing sensory experience try using it on top of the Hourglass N° 28 Primer Serum (review forthcoming)-- this combination is truly mind-blowing, and frankly unlike anything else that I have ever tried.

However, I think that this wonderful formula will do wonders as a treatment for a variety of different types of hair. Over-processed hair and scalp can use this as a treatment product to restore some lost moisture, to add a much needed moisture barrier, to smooth out the over-worked cuticle, and to bring back some lost shine and luster.

For a healthy, lustrous mane, apply one small pump after shampoo and conditioner, to damp hair prior to styling. Pat on to hair from the ends towards the scalp. As a scalp treatment, gently massage one pump into scalp-this is especially effective for dry patches and flaking just before shampooing.

Bare Love Hair is fueled to help deeply moisturize, add luster and enrich natural color. It repairs split ends and dry damaged hair and strengthens and fortifies every strand without leaving hair weighed down or feeling greasy.

My experience: This lovely firm oil is lightweight and highly concentrated-- so I have found that a very small amount goes a long way (you can always add more product if needed). I begin by warming up a pump of product in my hands until the gel liquefies-- it is at this point that I begin to work it through my hair and scalp massaging it in until it disappears. Whenever I use Luxury Hair Fuel my curly hair is soft and moisturized with an unmistakable sheen (a rarity for curly tresses). During the cold months, I have also fund Luxury Hair Fuel to be a wonderful and intensive scalp treatment that not only redresses the effects of a scalp ravaged by the cold weather, but it also serves as a protective barrier to prevent further trauma to the scalp as a result of the constant changes between the cold temperature outdoors and the heated interior settings. I also like to use this as a styling product because it really seems to tame my fly-aways and frizzies, and helps form beautifully behaved ringlets with a gorgeous sheen. This one little bottle does so much to protect and nourish the scalp and hair, and will most assuredly protect them both against the ravages of the elements year round.

Project Make-A-Dent: The Makeup Edition December 2013- Progress Check No. 2

As you may remember, back in October I launched Project Make-A-Dent in an effort to use some of my loved (yet neglected) makeup. The picture above illustrates the extent to which I had made a dent in each of the chosen products when I launched the series. The picture below shows you how much I have actually used since the series began.

Clearly the Chanel Lip Pencil, the MAC Eye Kohl and the Covergirl Liquiline Eye Pencil have been heartily used since the inception of this project. Likewise, the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine and Glossimer have been used enough to show great signs of wear. I am also pleased that the Chanel Joues Contraste is really beginning to look well-worn-- though I must confess that this is bittersweet since it is one of my all-time favorite blushes and the stunning US version was long ago discontinued by Chanel. What is far less impressive is my progress on the two MAC eye shadows, Carbon and Patina, since I don't seem to be reaching for either often enough. Empties Post Volume XVI: November & December 2013 Edition

I decided to see how many empties I would amass in a two month period- so I decided to post November and December in a single post. I actually did not set out to use piles of samples, but it just ended up happening. As it turned out it was a rather easy task given that many of the samples were shampoos, conditioners, and bath and shower gels.

The colder weather encouraged greater use of body lotions and creams-- which accounts for using up several full sized products.

Full sized products used: The Dr. Loretta Rainforest Mist (reviewed here) is an antioxidant rich moisturizing spray that offers skin immediate hydration. I found myself layering it under heavier creams to keep dry winter body skin at bay. The Reviva Labs Elastin & Collagen Body Firming Lotion (reviewed here) is a firming body lotion, but I used it because it was moisturizing and just made my skin feel good. Remedy with Phytoplex Hydraguard & Nourishing Skin Cream (both reviewed here) were perfect for my dry legs and feet. While my skin does not tend to be dry, I have found that the cold winter air is making my arms and legs uncharacteristically dry this season. The Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Creme (reviewed here) was another winner during the cold weather. I primarily used it on my neck and décolleté to give added moisture and protection against the dry cold air (and it worked wonders). My Prime Skincare Weightless Eye Cream (reviewed here) is a wonderful luxury eye cream that moisturizes, lightens dark circles, reduces puffiness, and reduces the appearance of fine lines. It is a really wonderful eye cream, and I whimpered when I used the last bit! Kai Deodorant (reviewed here) remains my very favorite deodorant! It smells delightful without being overpowering, and for me the protection lasts all day long.

The sample standouts are: The Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel (reviewed here) is such a wonderful cleanser that my full-size bottle lives in my shower and gets used all of the time (even with my Clarisonic). Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Lotion (reviewed here) is far and away my favorite toner-- it is gentle and alcohol-free. I have a big bottle that I reach for frequently! Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Eye Cream (reviewed here) is a wonderfully lightweight hydrating eye cream that sinks right in and makes the sensitive eye area look and feel great! Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 17 (reviewed here) is a really nice oil free lotion, but I prefer their Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30 (reviewed here) because then I don't need to use an additional sunscreen. Both versions are very emollient and moisturizing, but the higher SPF version is antioxidant rich-- making it the obvious choice for me. The one sample that resulted in a mega full-size purchase is the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Extra Strength Peel-- this two step maintenance program (overview here) is just phenomenal. This system is so effective that I actually purchased the largest box that they make!!!!

Mario Badescu Acne Repair Kit Review

Whether you have occasional breakouts or those that occur with greater frequency-- you want relief fast. While my combination skin is generally quite clear I do occasionally breakout, and when I do I like to use highly effective products that spot treat the pimples directly. When I received the Mario Badescu Acne Repair Kit my skin was very clear, but within a few weeks I had the occasion to test the efficacy of this kit. Whatever the cause (holiday chocolate treats or monthly cycle), I woke up with a few pimples that I wanted to have go away fast. AND. THEY. DID.

While my breakout was rather small, it did allow me to try all three products. I used the Drying Lotion on a couple of little whiteheads, the Drying Cream on a slightly larger pimple, and the Buffering Lotion on one deep pimple that needed to be zapped before wreaking havoc on my cheek. Within just a single day of use I noted a remarkable difference, and by the following morning they only thing that was left was a small head on the deepest pimple treated with the Buffering Lotion. In short, the turn-around time was astoundingly fast for me. So much so, that these three products will remain my go-to fixes whenever I have a breakout.

The perfect acne kit. Everything you need to get acne erupted skin looking clear and healthy is in this kit in full sizes. Our world famous Drying Lotion (1oz.) clears up whiteheads overnight while our Drying Cream (0.5 oz.) conceals blemishes as they heal, and Buffering Lotion (1 oz.) helps fight larger areas of deep eruptions and helps prevent new acne before it starts.

1) Drying Lotion: The Drying Lotion is a fast acting, effective acne spot treatment. Formulated with salicylic acid, calamine and other quick-drying ingredients, this product will shrink ugly whiteheads virtually overnight while you sleep. While other acne spot treatments can irritate and dry delicate or sensitive skin, this product is safe and effective for all skin types.

HOW TO USE: Before bed, after cleansing, toning and moisturizing apply a dab of lotion directly on the whitehead using a cotton swab. Do not rub in. Let it dry and rinse off in the morning. DO NOT shake the bottle and apply only the pink sediment on the skin.

BEAUTY TIP: Great for back acne and breakouts on the chest. The Drying Lotion will also take the itch out of mosquito bites fast!

INGREDIENTS: Isopropyl Alcohol,Deionized Water (Aqua), Calamine, Camphor, Colloidal Sulfur, Salicylic Acid,Glycerin, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Talc.

2) Drying Cream: Acne cream that conceals! Drying Cream is an effective treatment to dry up small under the surface bumps and pimples. Just a few dabs smoothed on the erupted areas prevent pimples from getting larger and spreading out of control. Aloe rich cream conceals and heals erupted pimples.

HOW TO USE: Apply sparingly on pimples by dabbing with fingertip until cream blends into the skin. Best when applied after moisturizer, before make-up.

INGREDIENTS: Deionized Water (Aqua), Zinc Oxide,Aloe (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice) Gel,Cetyl Alcohol, Lemon (Citrus Medica Limonum) Extract, Colloidal Sulfur, Ervol,Octyl Palmitate,

Ichthammol, Polysorbate 80, Titanium Dioxide, Polyglycerylmethacrylate (and) Propylene Glycol.

3) Buffering Lotion: Specifically designed to treat large, deep, cystic acne, the buffering lotion covers large erupted areas for overall treatment. Formulated with nourishing B vitamins and amino acids for healthy skin as well as soothing anti-inflammatory herbal extracts to promote healing. Reduce cystic acne fast with this deep penetrating, fast absorbing formula.

HOW TO USE: Shake bottle until white sediment is completely dissolved, apply solution to areas of cystic breakout with clean fingertips. Use nightly on affected areas.

BEAUTY TIP: For moderate to severe cystic breakouts apply Buffering Lotion before Mario Badescu’s Drying Mask. After removing the mask apply a second application of Buffering Lotion and leave on overnight. May also be used for acne on the chest and back (bacne).

Overall assessment: I still can't quite believe how quickly this set eradicated my breakout. This is now officially my go-to kit whenever I need relief from pesky pimples. A+
