Wen by Chaz Dean Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner Review: Perfection for the Dry Cold Weather!

Purchased by me (Affiliate links)

Initially when I purchased the Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner, I had some misgivings about using a non-lathering conditioning shampoo, but that soon gave way to elation when I saw the effects of this product on my dry-leaning curly hair. I assumed my hair would be left feeling less than clean and weighed down, and I simply could not have been more wrong.

Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner is, "a five-in-one conditioning cleanser designed to improve hair health, reduce frizz, moisturize, add shine, and retain color."

Pamper and invigorate your stressed-out tresses with this luxurious, multitasking cleanser and conditioner designed to impart shine, luster, and softness. The lightweight, low-lather formula is a universal product that caters to all your haircare needs, regardless of hair type. Herbal extracts like aloe leaf juice and sweet almond oil help your locks retain moisture, while protecting them from daily and future damage.

Designed to streamline your daily hair cleansing routine, this formula replaces shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler, and leave-in conditioner. This product is ideal for brittle, broken hair that has been weakened from coloring, relaxing, or heat styling.

Here are their claims

Research results:
Based on a 3-week study of participants using the Cleansing Conditioner:
- 97% agreed their hair was shinier
- 90% agreed their hair had more bounce and body
- 90% agreed their hair was less frizzy

Based on a 4-week independent study
- 75% of respondents reported added moisture to their hair after 4 weeks

Clinically proven to
- Reduce frizz up to 50%
- Increase hair strength up to 70% after one use
- Increase hair manageability up to 70% after one use
- Give hair up to 95% less breakage after one application

My experience: I immediately noticed that my hair was remarkably soft and silky after use. There is no residue left behind, and it does not weigh down my hair in any way. While their suggested use asserts that you should use 10-15 pumps of product- I find that amount completely unnecessary and wasteful. I have long hair and only use about two pumps of product and massage it into my hair and leave it on for the duration of my shower. When I rinse it out my hair is completely cleansed, conditioned, and free of tangles. The Sweet Almond Mint scent is invigorating and very pleasant, but I do find that the scent dissipates soon after my hair dries. Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner leaves my hair with an unmistakable sheen as well as glossy manageable curls-- and for this alone I love it! As with any shampoo or conditioner, I find that it is important to maintain product efficacy by not using the same products too many days in a row. Therefore, every few weeks I tend to use a clarifying shampoo in order to start anew. I must say that Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner is so nourishing that it is one of my very favorite haircare products during the colder months of the year, thus it is among my most reached for products right now!

Their Suggested Usage:
-Rinse hair thoroughly, and then apply 10-15 pumps of conditioner to your palms and rub together. Add more for longer and thicker hair.
-Apply to your scalp, massaging vigorously and add a splash of water to create a slight foaming effect. WEN does not contain sodium laurel sulfate so it won’t lather.
-Massage vigorously for one to three minutes.
-Rinse hair thoroughly, massaging scalp and running fingers through to the ends.
-For best results, Chaz suggests you cleanse, rinse, and repeat. If you do, use half the recommended pumps for each cleanse.

-Botanical Extracts: Nourish and condition; impart shine and softness to damaged hair.
-Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice: Helps moisturize the scalp and hair.
-Sweet Almond Oil: Emollient high in protein and fatty acids; helps nourish and moisturize the scalp and hair.

Does not contain: Sulfates, Synthetic Dyes, Petrochemicals, Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Phthalates or Triclosan.
Overall assessment: LOVE LOVE LOVE! This is a fantastic product!

  1. I have lavender and fall apple, and I love them both. I use 6 pumps for my short hair and it works just fine, if I use less pumps it makes my hair feel weird. If you buy it from qvc you get better sales.

    1. Hi The Beauty and The Business! Interesting that you use 6 pumps with short hair! Thanks for the heads up about the deals on QVC. I really like this one a great deal, and have only purchased it from Sephora.

  2. 10-15 pumps??? That sounds like A LOT of product! I'm glad it's only 2 in real life. This sounds like something I'd be interested in for sure!

    1. I know, doesn't that sound excessive?! At that rate it would take no time to get through a big bottle! You may feel the need to use more than 2 pumps, but I haven't found the need for more. You might like it, Sunny!

  3. Sadly, this did not work for me at all. I have very long thick straight hair and Wen makes my hair feel sticky in the roots. I have tried 15, 20, 25,..40 and so on pumps to no avail :( I really wanted to love this since it cuts my shower routine in half and my hair feels smooth at the ends. I am enjoying very much the sleek shampoo and conditioner by Bumble and Bumble. It does reduce the frizz and exorbitant volume of my hair and that is pretty much all I need right now.
How are things on your end darling Helen? I am here revising an article to be resubmitted and applying to more jobs. I hope your feral ones are doing great!

    1. Hi wefadetogray! I'm sorry that this didn't work for you-- that sounds awful that it left your hair feeling sticky at the roots-- that would be maddening! For me, I find that it works nicely-- but I have never followed the directions, and just intuitively used the amount that felt right. Bumble and Bumble makes some really wonderful products, and the ones that reduce frizz and excessive volume are fabulous.

I'm glad to hear that you are revising an article and applying for more jobs-- my fingers are crossed that it all goes as planned! I'm working hard trying to meet lots of deadlines before the quarter ends and the new one begins. I am also about to embark on updating my course website so that I can load all of the images right to my website so that my students have everything in one place (syllabus, weekly reading schedule, images discussed in class etc.). I can hardly believe that the year is almost over!! xoxox

  4. Lovely review as always, my dear! I have been sooo curious about this one--I've heard many many great things. I still have reservations though since my hair is on the oily side instead of dry/frizzy, so I just keep imagining that my hair will feel as if I've tried to use a regular conditioner on my hair as shampoo...eek! Also, I admit it: I know sulfates are bad for the hair and especially color-treated hair (which mine is) but I'm addicted to super foamy shampoos! (...and face washes...and body washes...:P). To me, the more bubbles the better! Buuut, I am so curious about this WEN stuff that I can't imagine I will be able to hold off for long. I suppose if I don't like it, I can always give it to my mom or sister!

    1. My darling, Becca!! How I have missed you!!!!!! I hope that life, work, school etc. are going well! I have no idea how well Wen would work on oily hair. You should ask for a sample the next time that you are at Sephora, and I would REALLY cut the suggested amount way down to see if it works for you. The last time I was there they had several other scents available as well-- so it's worth looking at.

I definitely know what you mean about loving foamy shampoos-- this one definitely requires a big paradigm shift when you love foam! <3

  5. I've actually never tried WEN because of the wheat protein (I'm allergic). It seems like most of the cleansing conditioners have it. I do like the idea of using just one product for my hair in the shower!

    1. Hi Amber! Those with wheat allergies (or celiac) definitely want to keep away from this since it definitely contains hydrolyzed wheat protein. I agree with you about the convenience of using a single hair product in the shower though. There must be some line out there that has a similar idea, but without the wheat protein! :-)

  6. This is really odd, but I tried a new shampoo and conditioner over the weekend that I didn't realize had wheat protein in it. My hair is amazing (its a fab shampoo and conditioner, I don't necessarily think it's from the wheat lol). I had no bad reactions, yay! Hopefully it stays that way. :)

    1. Hi Amber, That is just so strange that it isn't bothering you at all! My fingers are crossed that it continues to work for you!! What is this fab shampoo and conditioner, and do I need to try it?! :D

    2. Yes, you might need to!! I'm testing some newish shampoos and conditioners (and serums) from the Hask line. The argan oil set made my hair soft and smooth after only one use. I was pretty shocked at how good my hair felt!!

    3. I will definitely look into it then!!!!! Thanks for the recommendation! :D
