Project Make-A-Dent: The Makeup Edition- The One Month Progress Check!

As you may recall from my original post here, one month ago I decided to make the bold move and begin the task of using up a few bits and bobs from my makeup stash. The idea was that we get tempted (and often succumb) to all of the gorgeous seasonal collections and often forget about the many things collecting dust in our makeup drawers. I decided to offset some of my unabashed consumerism by making a real and concerted effort to use up a few things in my stash, or at the very least make-a-dent in them. I am looking for more of you to join me by attempting to do the same thing with me. This does not mean that you need to consider imposing a "no-buy" just that you single out a few things that you have and make an effort to use them.
The results after one month:
1) I used the Chanel Joues Contraste Blush in Narcisse quite a bit, but the pan only appears a touch more used up.

2) I used the Chanel Lip Pencil in Beige enough to have sharpened off the "C" and part of the "H"-- so I was pretty pleased.

3) The Rouge Coco Shine in Royallieu is noticeably smaller since I carried it around in my handbag and used it frequently.

4) I also was surprised that I made a pretty decent dent in the Chanel Glossimer in Glaze-- I actually found layering the three Chanel lip products together were quite lovely.

5) Since the Rouge Bunny Rouge Tinted Moisturizer comes in an opaque tube- there is no way for you (or me) to gauge how much I actually used, but in the spirit of full disclosure I could have made more effort! I used it about 10-12 times during the whole month and don't really think that it made that much difference.

6) The MAC Carbon and Patina Eye Shadows look pretty much the same as they did last month. I used them a couple of times, but not enough to make any real difference.

7) The MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl is definitely smaller than before, and I reached for it enough to remember just why I love that eye pencil so much (it's just stunning).

8) The most dramatic transformation is undoubtedly the Covergirl Liquiline eye pencil-- this is an amazing rich black that gives me the perfect cat eye every single time, and it is so affordable!

How did you do this month? Did you make a dent? Did you finish any of your makeup?

I invite all of you to join me on this quest. If you aren't active in social media, then leave your monthly results in the comment section of the posts. If you are active on Twitter then let's use the hashtag: #projectmakeadent My Twitter handle: @lolassecret

  1. I finished a mineral veil and one of those small Bite Beauty lipglosses. Not very much but I'm working on them.

  2. Nice job! That Glossimer definitely looks like it was used regularly. I have a hard time using older products when I get new goodies, but I should do this too, I'll have to go view my stash to see what needs some love.

    1. Thanks, Momo! I actually hadn't even realized what a good size dent that I made in the Glossimer until I took the update picture! I agree with you wholeheartedly-- it is very difficult using older products when all of the new goodies beckon us to use them. I thin that the trick is to mix it up so that you can really enjoy both- rather than feeling like you are only allowed to use up the older stuff! I find that I forget about certain things in my stash-- and this is a great way of reacquainting myself with these things. The key is not feeling deprived! Keep me posted!

  3. Congratulations on your hard work. I'm making a dent in my huge mascara stash since I'm worried they'll dry out. I'm pretty much interchanging them daily. I have a Rock & Republic eyeshadow that I wear all the time and I'm worried that I'll use it up but it's the perfect browbone color for me.

    1. Thanks, Marcia! I am definitely trying to make an effort to use some of the things that I haven't giving enough love lately-- it definitely makes me feel better about newer purchases to (or at least allows me to justify them). Making a dent in a mascara stash is a brilliant plan since the clock starts ticking on those as soon as we open them! It's a shame that R&R stopped making their makeup, but you should really enjoy that one!! You will find something else that you love once you have finished it! Keep me posted on your progress!

  4. i think this is a great idea! my stash is relatively new (i became obsessed a little over a year ago) so nothing has been collecting dust for too long but i love the idea. maybe i can put a different palette on the countertop every week so everything gets constant use? just earlier today i was thinking it was a shame my naked 2 palette got pushed to the wayside as i acquired more colorful palettes to play with (i love greens and purples!) and reading this post has really hammered the point in!

    1. Hi Chia-Yi Liu! I'm so glad that you like this idea!! I would think that this is the perfect time for you to join in-- since you haven't accumulated so much that you hardly know what you have anymore!! Naked2 getting pushed to the wayside is precisely where this all begins!!!! I am so excited that you are joining me/us in #projectmakeadent! Keep me posted! :D

  5. WOW what an interesting project! This is a great idea especially when you have lots of make up.
I tend to rotate my make up items that I use everyday to balance the usage of each product. I love the idea of writing a post about this project :D Great Job, Lola!

    1. Hi memoiselle! I'm so glad that you are interested in this project! I hope that you join me! Your method of rotation is really a great one to make sure that you will use more of your stash. For me, I find that I have a tendency to often obsess about certain products and use them over and over and over again. I am hoping that this project will continually reacquaint me with some of the things that I have forgotten about! :D

  6. Have to say I LOOOOOVE this project make a dent!!! Fantastic idea and I'm glad to see you've been able to make a dent in your products :-) I've vowed to finish up my BB foundation stick and some kind of lip product other than a balm, even if it's a mini lipstick. I think I'm also on the verge of finishing up KGD loose powder. So I think 3 things is pretty good?? But I think I need to do some real makeup soul searching because it really makes such a concerted effort to even, as you say, make a dent in something!!! I guess it would help if I wore makeup more LOL! So perhaps my efforts need to be focused more on frequency...

    1. Hi Gummy! I'm so glad that you love this project!! Please join me!!!!! Focussing on those three products is PERFECT!!! You will feel so great once you have used them up, and it will encourage you to continue to make a dent in your stash! I hear you about doing makeup soul searching-- and I think that I need to do that as well. It becomes crazy when one has such a huge stash that one forgets about so many products that collect dust. When I work from home I often don't bother to wear any makeup at all-- other times I do just to admire and enjoy a new lipstick, blush etc. What I find difficult to reconcile at times is the constant craving for new things when I have so much already, and when I most certainly have plenty of dupes! I think that this is just one small way of trying to become accountable to myself, and frankly to justify purchases because of a commitment to use what I buy. I think that this reaches a different level of urgency since I have come to a point where I think nothing of spending $50.00 on a single lipstick- and that I don't bat an eye at the idea of buying more than one at a time! PLEASE JOIN me, but beloved Gummy!
