Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner: Review & Swatches

Purchased by me (Affiliate links)

I have used Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliners as long as I can remember, and love their gel texture, their consistent high quality, and the color range available. They are perfect for a swipe and go cat eye, or a more complex looks. I have even used them as a base, or as an eyeshadow. They have been a no-fail and easy to use part of my eye makeup routine for so long that I tend to take them for granted, and it was for that very reason that I thought that I should feature them. If you love the versatility and ease of use associated with gel eyeliners-- then these are definitely worth your consideration. One important tip is to screw the lid on tightly between uses so as not to dry them out. I also store them upside down because this also seems to encourage longevity and retain their creamy texture.

This award-winning liner gives you the look of liquid liner with the ease and feel of a gel formula. Long-wearing, water-resistant color glides on and lets you get it just right before it dries, then stays without a smear or crease until you take it off.

To apply: "Dip tip of Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush into gel formula (coat both sides of brush head). Wipe off excess on tissue before applying to eye. Work quickly as product becomes transfer-resistant once dry."

  1. I have Black Ink and Forest Shimmer Ink. While I might not repurchase Black Ink (black gel liners function about the same on me), Forest Shimmer Ink and many other shades are great alternatives for those who want something other than black!

    1. Hi Sunny, Isn't Forest Shimmer Ink GORGEOUS!!! Their other colors are certainly more interesting and novel alternatives to a black gel liner, but the black certainly is a classic-- of course it is quite dupable though!

  2. Now I have to go through the stash to see if I have Forest. If I do it might be too old though. You've got a great collection of these.

    1. That one is definitely gorgeous. I figured that I would stop at 5-- unless of course some unbelievably gorgeous must-have limited edition color is released.

    2. I had an espresso ink (I think that was the name) that was old and I threw it out. Then I learned online you can "revive" these by putting them in the microwave on high for 5 seconds or so. I've tried it with dried out cream eye shadows and it worked! It dries out again, but you just pop it in the micro again.

    3. Hi Kristen, Yes- that is the best trick ever!

  3. Forest Shimmer Ink shall be mine! I have hazel eyes, so purple/plum/reds usually bring out the strong green tones in my eyes, but green is my favorite color and I am partial to a good green eyeliner! I've heard nothing but good things about the formula of these, too.

    1. Hi Hannah! I have hazel eyes as well, and I love wearing shades that pull out the green in my eyes. I think that Forest Shimmer Ink is very flattering for our color eyes! Yes, the formula is quite nice, indeed.

  4. I just finished work for today and I am taking my break in your blog. Does that make sense? I mean grammatically? :s I have a tiny neuron hanging from the tip of my nose right now. I just needed to see something lovely with pretty colors and nice textures so these BB liners are doing the trick. Excellent! I own and love many yet I am so so so darn lazy with my eyes, Helen, that you cannot imagine. I just want to be the kind of woman who puts a bit of effort on her eyes and adds some definition. New years resolution perhaps?
Have a lovely night! its cold and gorgeous in here for sure. I still lament how my Sephora wishlist ended in nothingness but alas, such is the end of the year :( I will destroy my wallet once all of this is done ;)
Many hugs to gorgeous Lola and Maximus

    1. Congratulations for having finished work for the day (despite the fact that my comment comes the next day)-- I hope that it was unbelievably productive! I am touched beyond words that you sought refuge here!! You really have no idea just how much that means to me!. After a long day of academic work- I, too, love to look at pretty colors and nice textures. Trust me, I know just what you mean-- often when I am working from home I don't bother with makeup at all! On the other hand, there are other times where I do wear makeup- if only to admire the colors and textures on my skin!

Don't lament having foregone the Sephora sale-- there are always more opportunities to cash n on their sales!

      Have a lovely weekend! <3

    1. Hi honey!!!!!!!! I have missed you SO MUCH!!!! I keep meaning to send you an email to catch up!! I'm glad that you liked this post! I agree- the best colors are often LE or get discontinued :-( Thank you for sending some of your True Summers this way! That is very kind of you! Since I seem to have considerable difficulty sticking to my Winter palette- they should be able to find lots of their colors here! I hope that life is treating you well! We need to catch up before too long! xoxoxox

    2. Let's do! It's such a travesty that we live on opposite coasts.

I enjoyed your Allure interview immensely and have to much to catch up on.

My only news is DH and I are about to become kitty foster parents. We certainly don't need new pets, so we can give service where it's needed to the shelter, give love to kitties in need, and hope and pray that someone wants to adopt tao adolescent black littermates. I lost my big, greasy bunny (Ivan the cat) a month ago, and I am still grieving. Hard. I think I need a distraction of love. We go meet our new kids tomorrow. >^..^<

Oh, and here's something that might amuse (or horrify) you. DH is as big a suck up as I am for all things cute, and we often discuss photos on cuteoverload.com. One early evening, he was in his cube talking to me on the phone about all the excellent "kitty porn" out there. Someone overheard him and ... lolol He had a hard time talking that one down, cuz kitty sounds an awful lot like ....

    3. I agree-- it is such a shame that we live so far apart-- it would be such a supreme delight to live near one another!

I am glad that you enjoyed the Allure interview, and agree that we need to take some time to catch up.

OMG, I am so sorry to hear about Ivan-- I can only imagine your grief. I still grieve so deeply over the loss of Sebastian, Luca and Emma. I wish that there was something that I could say, or a magic wand that I could wave to take away your pain. I understand grieving hard far better than I would like!

I think that it is really so generous that the two of you are becoming foster kitty parents-- I don't know how good I would be at fostering because I get so attached that I fear it would prevent me from placing them. I want to see pictures of the new babies!!!!!!!!

OMG ROFLMAO-- that is absolutely HILARIOUS! I can't believe that someone overheard him-- it must have been really fun trying to talk that one down! I'm going to have to show cuteoverload.com to my husband-- he'll love it! He constantly texts and emails me stuff like!! <3

  6. I have black ink, which is a staple, and recently got violet ink for a softer look. It doesn't say it's a shimmer, but it does seem to have some fine sparkle to it, which may be irritating my lash line if I use it too many days in a row.

    1. I have trouble with sparkle too close to my lash line sometimes as well-- I definitely try to avoid getting them too close to my sensitive eyes because it's just not worth risking irritation for me. The violet ink is so pretty, though!

  7. I love Bobbi Brown, but don't own too many things because of the price point. however, I've been looking for the perfect brown gel liner that's not too black and not too tan, and I think Chocolate Shimmer may be it! Thanks for the swatches!

    1. Hi Kiss My Sparkle- Chocolate Shimmer Ink is just stunning, and it definitely ranks among my very favorite brown liners. The color is rich without being too black or too tan- so it's pretty much perfect! I'm so glad that the swatches were useful to you. :-)
