Doppelgänger Taupe Alert: Rouge Bunny Rouge Caress of Mink & Guerlain Bronze Ora No. 02- Swatches

As noted in my review of the new Guerlain Fard Métal Loose Iridescent Eye Shadow in Bronze Ora No. 02 (LE) ($35.00 for .02 oz.), it is remarkably similar to Rouge Bunny Rouge Loose Glitter Fire Drops in Caress of Mink ($23.00 1.8 grams or 0.063 oz.). When I say remarkably similar I do mean that they are nearly indistinguishable from one another.
Both shades are a taupe-lovers dream!

Both are absolutely stunning, but they are so close that you can easily opt for one or the other. Additionally, if you miss out on the Bronze Ora No. 02 (LE) you can rest assured that you can always get Caress of Mink instead. Both are of the highest quality, therefore neither choice will be a concession.

Do you need both? Unlikely, but if you love high quality luxury loose eyeshadows in taupe- then you probably will want one of them.

  1. I love comparisons like this because I like to ooh and aah over the slight differences that will make one shade better for me than another. When you get right down to it, most of our cosmetic colors are really just variations on a theme; so it's a question of finding the right undertones and subtleties to suit our skin tone, eye color, and hair color. On me, Caress of Mink actually reads as having a decidedly pink undertone whereas Bronze Ora is a classic taupe with a touch of warm bronze. It's the pink in my lids and green in my eyes that emphasizes the pink undertone in Caress of Mink. I'm probably the only one who notices, but that's because I'm a bonafide makeup junkie :-) I'm sure the Taupeaholics in the crowd would also insist that these two gorgeous taupes are different enough to warrant having both :-) Bottom line: Does the average person need both? Nah! But it would sure be nice to have both!

    1. Thanks, Eileen! I tend to like reading these sorts of comparisons as well. I agree with your assessment that most of the cosmetic colors are really just variations on a theme. I think that taupes are especially tricky because they can often be such complex amalgams of color. I'm not in the least bit surprised that Caress of Mink has a decidedly pink undertone on you, and that Bronze Ora is a classic taupe with a touch of warm bronze. It was this very idea that prompted me to write this post the other day:

In fact, it was Charleston Girl's delightful post about Bronze Ora that made me want it, but I thought that it would look markedly different on me than on her. So I actually waited to swatch it in person, and knew that I had to have it. Interestingly, on my eyes these two look pretty similar- neither pulling too warm, nor too cool (or pink). That said, I fully expect that they will wear/appear quite differently from person to person.

I agree with you though- a true Taupeaholic will probably "need" both- just because! I consider myself a definitely Taupeaholic, and as such am so happy to have both!

  3. Well I guess I can say that I don't need both AT ONCE, but it's nice to know that if I get the Guerlain shadow, I won't have to be stingy with using it, since I can order the RBR as a backup/ replacement. Thanks!

    1. YOu are so welcome, Kate! You can probably survive having one at a time- though as Eileen pointed out they look pretty different on her, and may on you as well. You know how kookie taupes can be, and how they often have a penchant for shifting hue depending on the skin tone of the wearer. On me, however, they remain very close in color!

  4. Is it my monitor or do both these shades have a hint of lavender to their undertone? And is the Guerlain lighter by just a smidgen (or maybe cooler) than the RBR? Very important stuff when you're a Winter, lol.

    1. Ever-so-slightly. On me I would say that the RBR is a smidgen cooler, and the Guerlain is a smidgen warmer. I agree that it is important stuff when you are a Winter!! :D
