Chantecaille Lip Chic in Daphne & Luminous Gloss in Pink Melon: Review and Swatches

The moment that I saw the new lip products from Chantecaille, I knew that I had to have the Lip Chic in Daphne ($35.00 .07 oz.) and the Luminous Gloss in Pink Melon ($34.00 0.26 oz.). I don't remember telling anyone just how badly that I wanted both, so you can imagine my unmitigated delight when my friend Nicolle gave them to me for my birthday!
These shades may look unassuming, but trust me they are stunning!
Lip Chic details: "Lip Chic is a revolutionary hybrid that combines the high shine and plumping effects of a gloss with the rich, even coverage of a lipstick. It goes on with an incredibly soft, lightweight texture as it helps to smooth and firm the lips. This exceptionally comfortable formula is easy to apply in an even finish that is shiny but never sticky. Lip Chic leaves lips fuller and decidedly more youthful in appearance, but never irritated."

The Lip Chic formula is moisturizing and unbelievably comfortable on the lips, and has the perfect amount of cushion. As with so many hybrid formula lipsticks, the wear time tends to be shorter than more pigmented traditional lipstick formulas- though I do find that I get about 2-3 hours of wear out of this formula.
  • The perfect combination of gloss and lipstick
  • High shine meets rich, even coverage
  • Added collagen gives lips a plumping boost
  • Paraben-free
Luminous Gloss details: "An extraordinary new long wearing lip gloss formula that is both super hydrating and dramtically brilliant. The Luminous Glosses add the perfect pop of shine and splash of color to any pout."

The Luminous Gloss formula is a long-wearing lip gloss- especially compared to the Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss formula. Luminous Gloss is a bit thicker, tackier, and longer wearing than the Brilliant Glosses, but it is by no means uncomfortably sticky. Instead, it is a very comfortable lip gloss that leaves the lips hydrated, smooth, and lusciously shiny!
  • An entirely new formulation that offers up to 6 hours of long lasting shine
  • Innovative shiny polymers created a fluid 3-d like glass effect for volume
  • Water binding molecules hydrate and smoothe lips
  • New flexible doe foot applicator
  • Paraben free
Lip Chic in Daphne is pearlized peachy pink perfection. Luminous Gloss in Pink Melon is described as a soft sparkling pink. Layered together they form the perfect pink pout.
Daphne and Pink Melon are delightful worn individually, but I find them all the more stunning when paired together.

Every time that I swatch horizontally, I find myself thinking about Mark Rothko paintings. Interestingly, I initially started beauty blogging as a diversion from writing and researching in my field- but have since found that whether discussing the aesthetics of cosmetics or paintings, that there is a point of convergence between these seemingly disparate art forms (for a more concise explanation click here). Don't get me wrong, I would by far prefer to look at a Rothko canvas than one of my swatches, but I find it curious that stacked swatches always evoke Rothko for me. Then again, maybe I just need to get out more!

Overall assessment: I'm madly in love with both Daphne and Pink Melon!

  2. I LOVE that you see Rothko's work while swatching! I studied art history and art in college, and Rothko is my favorite of the Abstract Expressionists! Your "About Me" section really is the most interesting take on beauty blogging that I have come across- AWESOME!! :D

    1. Hi Krystal, They are both gorgeous colors, and I love the shine as well! I actually do find both of them hydrating and super comfortable to wear. I definitely try to keep away from more drying formulas, and find these babies to be very forgiving on my lips. :D

  6. yay - I am glad they both worked out! Sometimes buying lip products is similar to jean shopping -- takes time to find the perfect match! :)

    1. Hi Jennifer- The colors are absolutely perfect! I hate it when the wind blows my hair into my gloss as well- especially with stickier glosses!!! :-)

  10. I bought a chantecaille lip chic in daphne , I noticed a weird smell / taste to it . I know people describe vanilla but I didn't smell that , it was an off smell.

    1. Hi Chrystal,

t sounds like you received one that turned-- I would exchange it for a replacement. I actually had the same thing happen to me recently-- I bought a replacement tube of Daphne that I ordered online, but when I received it- it was rancid. I don't know if it was a bad batch, old stock, or sat on a hot UPS truck too long, but my current tube is totally fine. The color is just so gorgeous!

    2. Funny, same problem here, also with Daphne. Maybe it was a bad batch or something. Hopefully I can find receipt to take back.

    3. Hi there! It certainly sounds as though each of us got one from a bad batch. Who knows if it sat on a dock somewhere in the blazing hot sun, or whether one of the ingredients itself was rancid. I would definitely exchange it for a new one, though!
