Beauty Resolutions to Consider for 2013

Man Ray.  A l’heure de l’observatoire-les Amoureux. (1934)
I) Use a sunscreen with a minimum of an SPF 30 on all exposed areas-- even into your hair line on the driver's side of your face. Not only will you prevent your skin from prematurely aging, but you will lessen your chances of getting skin cancer. My all-time favorite Holy Grail sunscreen is Clarins UV Plus HP Eran Multi-Protection SPF 40 because the texture is divine, it plays well with makeup, it is a 100% mineral sunscreen, it is easy to find, and it is reasonably priced.

II) Treat your hands and décolleté as you would your face. These areas, due to their exposure, tend to age at a more rapid rate. Therefore moisturize, pamper, and use sunscreen on those areas. I spoke about this issue in my My Daily/Huffington Post interview here.

III) Start using an eye cream, even if you don't think that you need one yet. The eye area is so delicate, and there's an eye cream out there that will suit every age and skin type. Your 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 year old self will thank you!

IV) Never sleep with makeup on, period. Remove your makeup no matter how tired you are. Mascara and eye makeup can migrate into your eyes while you sleep potentially causing a plethora of problems. These problems can range from bloodshot eyes, red and puffy eyes, scratched corneas, and more serious infections. If you are too tired to go through your entire cleansing ritual have a bottle of cleansing water on hand to remove everything from your eyes and face before you fall asleep. Additionally, sleeping with foundation, blush etc. on your face can clog pores and cause breakouts. Nighttime is the greatest time of skin cell turnover- therefore clean skin is essential to aiding, rather than impeding, this natural process. When I'm particularly exhausted and don't have the energy or inclination to do my entire nightly skincare routine I use my Koh Gen Do Cleansing Water to remove everything from my face and eyes. There are many such cleansing waters on the market these days, and they are perfectly suited to those lazy days and sleepy nights when you just can't be bothered.

V) Simplify your skincare ritual enough so that you will actually do it. If you have too many potions and lotions you will likely tire of so many steps and start creating short-cuts. Instead of spending a mortgage payment or two on piles of products that will end up collecting dust, or expiring before you get to them-carefully evaluate the needs of your skin and pick the products that address them. Less is more. I have been really enjoying the streamlined approach of vbeauté for the efficacy and well-edited selection of their fantastic products.

VI) Consider adding a face oil into your beauty routine. They are available in every price range, and they range from those formulated for acne prone skin types, to those for normal to combination skin, to those that target skin from the driest end of the spectrum. My Holy Grail facial oil is Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil because it is a magical golden elixir that leaves my skin unbelievably hydrated with an unprecedented glow from within. Additionally, it has eliminated two dry patches on my face that nothing else has ever addressed. I love this product so much, that it was my number one choice when I was asked to contribute to the My Daily/ Huffington Post article entitled The Beauty Gifts Girls Want For Christmas by Katie Jones. It is definitely the best beauty splurge that I have ever made, and to me it is definitely worth every cent. There is a good reason that Allure's Best of Beauty Awards selected Olio Lusso as among the winners in the Best Splurges Category!

VII) Buy what you need, or what you really love and will actually use. Just because it is from a limited edition collection doesn't mean that you will love or use it. Be more savvy when you hand over your credit card. Consider paying cash rather than using a credit card-- it will really make you stop and think about the purchase before parting with cash, whereas credit cards tend not to feel like real money. I have given much thought to this topic causing me to write an article on the subject.

VIII) Make a concerted effort to use what you buy. That way you won't accumulate overwhelming piles of things that you ultimately won't end up using. Starting my monthly Empties Posts has helped me tremendously. It has made me a more discriminating consumer, and it feels fantastic seeing the physical evidence that I am actually using what I have.

IX) Treat your feet with respect and pamper them daily. Pumice them when needed, and moisturize them with a nice rich cream nightly. I like to wear nice thick socks when I sleep in order to seal in the moisture. Your tootsies will thank you, and you can show off your pretty pedicure with pride when you aren't sporting scrappy feet!

X) Use a lip balm each night before going to sleep and you will wake up with baby soft lips. Whether you love Carmex or By Terry Baume de Rose-- keep it on your nightstand so that you remember to use it nightly. By doing this you will not only get more out of your lipsticks and glosses, but you will use less product when you aren't dragging them across a rougher lip surface. My favorite to date is Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm.

XI) Add a few Multitaskers to your makeup wardrobe so that you can look pulled together in a few minutes when you are pressed for time. One of my favorites is Susan Thompson Cosmetics Liquid Blush in Mim's The Word because you can apply it to your lips and cheeks with your fingers in a few seconds. Add a swipe of eye liner and mascara and you are out the door in minutes. Mim's The Word was my top choice when I was interviewed by Kelsie Blazier in her  REDBOOK article on 40 No-Fail Beauty Shortcuts.

XII) Try not to over-process your skin! We are constantly inundated by so many masks, exfoliants, peels, and serums that we often end up over-doing it. Too much of a good thing turns out not to be such a good thing after all. In fact, the rife succession of so many of these active products can cause breakouts, thinning of the skin, not to mention creating greater skin sensitivities, and can even break capillaries.

XIII) Periodically give your hair break from flatirons, blow dryers and other tools that can be very drying and damaging over time. Remember to deep condition your hair, and sometimes just let your hair dry naturally.

XIV) Consider adding a retinol based product into your nightly beauty routine. Retinoid creams or retinol creams, which are Vitamin A based anti-aging products, are now generally accepted as among the most effective anti-aging products on the market. They treat a myriad of beauty concerns from fighting fine lines, eradicating sun damage, reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, exfoliating dead skin cells, and evening out skin tone. What’s more, is the fact that they are now available in all price ranges from the affordable drugstore varieties to those with hefty luxury price tags. Many dermatologists are emphatic that the use of retinol creams necessitates the use of sunscreens since it is thought that retinols create photosensitivity. Other dermatologists argue that it is the retinol itself that shouldn’t be subjected to the sun because it can materially alter the efficacy of the product itself. Some retinol creams have up to 1% solutions, which often tend to be too powerful for people with sensitive skin, but many are buffered and come in .50% solutions. Higher percentage solutions may be obtained through your Dermatologist, and are only available with a prescription.

There are even retinol-based products on the market that have been specifically formulated for daytime use. However, most are formulated for nighttime use only. I use my retinol-based products at night only, and always wear a sunscreen during the day. My suggestion is always to err on the side of caution and where a sunscreen, and I was told by a dermatologist never to walk out of the house without wearing an SPF 30.

Retinol based products are not for everyone, and retinoids should be strictly avoided by pregnant women, women breastfeeding, people with hypersensitive skin. Consult a dermatologist to determine whether retinol based products are right for you. Click here to see what I said about retinol creams in my REDBOOK interview.

XV) If you find that you are breaking out- sometimes the culprit is the most obvious and the most overlooked: dirty brushes. Remember to clean your makeup brushes to avoid breakouts, eye infections, and the general unnecessary spread of germs.

XVI) Remember to use lip products with an SPF to protect your lips when you are outdoors. Whether you choose a lip gloss or a lip balm alone or to top off your lipstick-- it's important to remember to protect your pretty pout.

Shannon's Soaps Shaving Soap in Bergamot Mint: Review

Shannon's Soaps really knocked it out of the park with their Shaving Soap in Bergamot Mint- this little unobtrusive round bar is so spectacular that you will actually really enjoy shaving!

According to Shannon's Soaps, "If you've already tried traditional wet shaving, you know what it can do for you.  If you're here to get started, congratulations on your decision. Those who have traded in their can of shaving goo for a brush and mug are apt to wax poetic on the transformation of a daily chore into an enjoyable session of indulgent self-pampering, but I won't go that far."

Shannon developed this shaving soap at the request of her husband, and after much research and testing she developed this amazing product.  Shannon muses that while they have a few cans of shaving gel left, that neither she nor her husband will use anything other than the Shaving Soap now! You will understand why they abandoned all other shaving products when you try this Shaving Soap!

Shannon describes this shaving soap as "A handmade 'expensive oil' shaving soap that provides superior lathering and conditioning for the gentleman who shaves with brush and mug." While this shaving soap may seem old school- trust me when I tell you that this is not your grandfather's shaving soap- not by any stretch of the imagination. Indeed, your grandfather would have delighted in this tremendously emollient and moisturizing shaving soap that outperforms anything that he could have imagined! In fact, women and men alike will become devotees of this amazing product from the moment that they first try it. Simply stated, it leaves your skin unbelievably soft, smooth and remarkably moisturized. The rich emollient lather will encourage an unprecedented close shave that will leave the skin baby soft and silky smooth.
Brian, Shannon's wonderful husband, offers a fantastic tutorial in order for you to get the most out of this extraordinary shaving soap:

How to Lather and Use Shaving Soap

It takes a bit of practice, but all in all, it will be well worth it.  There really is no comparison between the comfort you get using a shaving soap versus a can of shaving gel or foam.

There are a couple different basic techniques - you can lather in a mug or bowl, or you can lather directly on your face.  We'll discuss mug lathering.  As far as basic equipment, you'll need a mug (obviously), a brush, and your shaving implement of choice.  As far as brushes, you can use a badger brush or a boar brush.  Some feel that boar, which is a bit stiffer, is better for soaps, since shaving soaps can be on the hard side.  You certainly can use a modern cartridge razor, but for my money, nothing is as cool as an old-school double-edge safety razor.  If you're a straight-razor user, my hat's off to you - you're a more daring man than I.

    1. Soak the Brush and Wet the Soap
Start by soaking your brush in hot water.  You can do this in your bowl or mug, or in the sink if you prefer.  I like using my mug, since it frees the sink up for brushing my teeth, washing my face, etc.  It also has the benefit of softening the soap (which is in the mug), which in my opinion makes it easier to lather.  If you're going to soak the brush somewhere other than in the mug with your soap, you might want to dribble a bit of water on top of your soap while you soak your brush.  Washing your face incidentally, will make shaving easier, as it softens up the hair.  It gets even easier if you shave after you shower.

    2. Drain the Brush and Soap
After the brush has been soaking for a few minutes, empty the water from your mug, and let the excess water run off your brush until it stops dripping.  Give the brush a shake or two.  I personally like to start with a brush that is dryer than what I think I might need, and add water back in if I have to.  Shannon's shaving soaps seem to work a bit better with less water than some other soaps, so this seems like a wise precaution.  Removing excess water is a bit difficult.

    3. Create the Lather
Work the brush in a circular motion on top of the soap.  Working more air into your lather, it will get stiffer, not unlike whipping cream.  If at this point you start to get a lather that's too thick and a bit stringy, you can add water, a few drops at a time, until things get back in line.  Be careful though, as too much water will make a runny lather that doesn't last.  Experience will eventually teach you how much water you need to get the most out of your soap.

    4. Apply the Lather
Now it's time to apply your lather.  Use painting strokes and circular, swirling motions to thicken the later up on your face and work it into your stubble, so as to stand the hairs up, enabling your razor to do its job better.  Your goal is to get enough lather on your face so as not to be able to see the skin beneath it.  Sufficiently lathered, you can now begin your first pass with your razor.  Good luck!

    Overall assessment: Best in class!

Shannon's Soaps Vanilla Bean Soap Review

I love everything that I have ever tried from Shannon's Soaps, and when the lovely Shannon sent me her Vanilla Bean Soap I was thrilled!

Handmade Fragrance Oil-Scented Soaps: "All these soaps have palm, coconut, olive, castor, and sunflower oils. Scented with fragrance oils, colored in various ways. A nice, hard conditioning bar with lots of lather. Different scents for different moods. (Some scents don't have essential oils that are stable or survive the lye reaction. For those, we use fragrance oils. And some are just for fun.)."

The Vanilla Bean Soap is, "A bold, creamy vanilla scent, and a deep vanilla bean color." If you love the smell of Vanilla Bean as do I, then welcome to Vanilla Nirvana (in caps because it is a real place courtesy of Shannon's Soaps)!!!!!!! This is a delectable smelling soap that is so yummy that you might be tempted to take a bite- though I definitely would not recommend it! It has a spectacularly rich and creamy lather, and the vanilla scent is so deliciously decadent that you will enjoy every single moment of using it! I highly recommend using it in the shower since the warm steam accentuates the scent and really is a treat to the senses. I also love using this soap as a shaving cream because it is so creamy and emollient.

Ingredients: Saponified oils of palm coconut, olive, sunflower, castor; fragrance.

Overall assessment: A+!! Absolute must-have soap!

    2.5-3 oz. round bar $3.00 each & 4+ oz. bar $4.00 from Shannon's Soaps.

I Love LA Series (Part I): Los Angeles County Museum of Art

I have been thinking about launching the I Love LA Series for a while now, and finally decided to do so in order to draw your attention to two very important exhibitions at LACMA currently on view. For any modern day Caravaggisti, or for those who want to learn more about the revolutionary style of the great Italian Baroque painter called Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio)- I urge you to go see this show. The show, entitled Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy, is on view through February 10, 2013.
Martha and Mary Magdalen (c. 1595-98) Detroit Institute of Arts (Source)
According to LACMA, "Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy introduces the work of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), one of the most popular artists of the past, rivaling in fame both Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. The stories of Caravaggio's life are legend, more myth than history, describing traits of personality, including passion and brutality, that came to describe the unique qualities of his work. The exhibition, made up of 56 works in all, including a record eight works by Caravaggio himself, covers the evolution of his style. Caravaggio's legacy is expressed in work by about twenty artists from Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands who carried into the late 17th century the strangeness, beauty and raw emotion of his work."
2001: A Space Odyssey Set Photo (1965-68) (Source)

Another show not to be missed is the extraordinary Stanley Kubrick Exhibition on view through June 30, 2013.

According to LACMA,"Stanley Kubrick was known for exerting complete artistic control over his projects; in doing so, he reconceived the genres in which he worked. The exhibition covers the breadth of Kubrick’s practice, beginning with his early photographs for Look magazine, taken in the 1940s, and continuing with his groundbreaking directorial achievements of the 1950s through the 1990s. His films are represented through a selection of annotated scripts, production photography, lenses and cameras, set models, costumes, and props. In addition, the exhibition explores Napoleon and The Aryan Papers, two projects that Kubrick never completed, as well as the technological advances developed and utilized by Kubrick and his team. By featuring this legendary film auteur and his oeuvre as the focus of his first retrospective in the context of an art museum, the exhibition reevaluates how we define the artist in the 21st century, and simultaneously expands upon LACMA’s commitment to exploring the intersection of art and film."

    Must-see exhibitions!

Alaffia Shea Butter African Black Soap Unscented- Review

According to Alaffia, "Our genuine African Black Soap is one of the healthiest soaps for the skin due to the purity and simplicity of the ingredients. In Togo, black soap is the only soap used by mothers to wash their newborn babies, as its purity makes it gentle and non-drying for their sensitive skin. Our black soap is hand made, using age-old traditional techniques from pure virgin oils. The ingredients of our African black soap are virgin palm kernel oil, pure, Certified Fair Trade unrefined shea butter and potash produced from the ashes of plantain leaves and bark from a local tree called Agow. The high percentage of shea butter is one of the unique features of our soap. Unscented for sensitive skin."
I am a big fan of Alaffia products, and really love their African Black Soap. I have been using their Liquid African Black Soap (reviewed here) in the shower for a while, and love it so much that I decided to buy the bar soap version as well. The Shea Butter makes this a very moisturizing soap, and as such it a great choice at my bathroom sink because it keeps my hands soft and moisturized. It is also wonderful in the shower, and I am particularly fond of using it for shaving. I chose the unscented version, which means that it contains no essential oils for scent, making it perfect for people with sensitive skin.
Ingredients: Saponified Unrefined Shea Butter & Unrefined Palm Kernel Oil.

Overall assessment: Fantastic company, fantastic soap, and a fantastic price.

3 oz. bar $3.95 I purchased mine at Whole Foods Market.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Hypercolor Brow & Hair Powder Review & Swatches

Anastasia Beverly Hills Hypercolor Brow & Hair Powder is described as, "Wipe on, wash out color. Instant Gratification. Get an intense flash of color without dyeing, bleaching, or spending hours in the salon. Apply to brows with an angled brush or rub the powder onto the tips of your hair or streak it for outrageously fabulous looks that wash out with ease. Set with hair spray when applying to hair or Brow Gel with applying to the brows."
INTENSE color without dyeing or bleaching.
    Works on all hair colors.
Most shades perfect for hair and brows.
    Pro Tips:

    HAIR
    1. Prep hair with a light application of glossing cream, styling wax, or leave-in conditioner.
    2. Separate your hair into sections and apply color by sandwiching your hair in between your fingers or a cosmetic sponge and the HYPERCOLOR BROW & HAIR POWDER compact, gliding the color on. We recommend using gloves and a towel around your shoulders to avoid color transferring onto your hands or clothing.
    3. Set with hairspray, spraying 10-12 inches away from your colored hair and misting lightly.
    4. To remove, shampoo 1-2 times.

BROWS (suitable for all colors of Anastasia Beverly Hills HYPERCOLOR Powder EXCEPT "In the Pink")
    1. Prep brow hair with a light application of Brow Fix. Prepping the brow helps the HYPERCOLOR Brow and Hair powder to adhere to your hair.
    2. Apply the HYPERCOLOR BROW & HAIR POWDER using an angled brush with light strokes. Build the color for a more intense finish.
    3. To complete your look, set your brows with Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel or Lash Genius Clear Waterproof Topcoat for an all-day hold.
These fabulous brow and hair powders are just so much fun to play with! It's an inexpensive and risk-free way to experiment with color, and it is perfectly on-trend. Furthermore, if you want to step outside of your comfort zone for New Year's Eve this is the perfect way to do so without an expensive trip to the salon. Additionally, you can wash it right out when you are done! I applied the colors in an opaque fashion on top in order for you to see how pigmented they are, but I blended them more everywhere else that I applied them.

Empties Post: Volume V: December 2012

I initially thought that I would make a larger dent in all of my samples during the month of December, but since I was using vbeauté skincare exclusively I really didn't use other skincare products. Still, I did manage to use up a few skincare samples that didn't interfere with reviewing the entire line.
Skincare Products: My big surprise was the Clarins UV PLUS HP Ecran Multi-Protection SPF 40- this is hands down the best sunscreen that I have ever tried, period end of subject!  Needless to say, I purchased the full sized bottle. It doesn't have a strange texture, it plays well with makeup, and feels silky smooth. REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask (reviewed here) is a fabulous peel mask- I used these samples while traveling. This is simply an amazingly effective mask, and I will continue using it as long as REN makes it! MAKE UP FOR EVER Sens'Eyes- Waterproof Sensitive Eye Cleanser (reviewed here) handles even the toughest waterproof makeup, and it does so effortlessly and gently.
Body & Hair Products: I try to be judicious in my use of hand sanitizers, but I did have a really bad flu this year so I did use them after touching door knobs at work. The one from Traders Joe's was of the regular gel variety, but the one that I really loved was Intelligent Nutrients Certified Organic Hand Sanitizer (reviewed here) because it was a pleasant smelling organic product in a spray bottle. It was so convenient to use because of the way that it was packaged, and I highly recommend it for this reason and for the quality of the product itself. My husband bought Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo and didn't use it because he preferred one of their other shampoos- so it just sat in the shower unused. Being one who hates waste, I decided to repurpose it as a shower and shave gel- and it worked well as such. The Curls Gel-les'c curl gel/ shine serum (reviewed here) was a really lovely product that felt moisturizing on my curly locks, and it really gave my hair a lovely shine! EOS Pomegranate Raspberry Shave Cream was an awesome and affordable product that left my legs very soft and moisturized after use.
Makeup, Lip Balms & Fragrances: I made a decent dent in my pile of fragrance samples- which I have vowed to get through. It drives me nuts having drawers filled with piles of things that I don't use-- so it gives me great satisfaction using up these perfume samples. As always, if they smell awful on me I end up using them near the kitty litter boxes to deodorize the area. I managed to get through another Suki Lip Repair Butter (reviewed here) and a Weleda Everon Lip Balm (I love this stuff!), but both were nearly used up- so it didn't take much time to use the last bits of each of them. I also used up a Chanel Mascara sample, the last bits of a MAC eyeshadow duo, and the last bits of a Trish McEvoy Blush. For the last few months I have been trying to make a dent in some of my makeup, and the aforementioned MAC and Trish McEvoy products were on my hit list to finish up before 2013. I am so pleased that I actually finished both of them.

Which products did you finish, toss, or give away in December?

Reviva Labs Skin Energizing Gel Review

According to Reviva Labs. their Skin Energizing Gel is a remarkable gel that "stimulates skin's metabolism, can help lessen the appearance of wrinkles, improve clarity, help firm up skin texture. And it does it F-A-S-T. In just a few days you start to see and feel results. Use alone nightly, or under your regular night cream." This really is a miracle product during the colder months when you need a little more moisture, and a bit more out of your lotions and creams. This is one of those genius products that once you use- you will vow to never be without!
I have added it to day and night moisturizers, used it all by itself, and even reapplied it during the day when my skin was feeling particularly dry and weather-beaten. It is suitable for all skin types, and really will enhance the efficacy of your moisturizer. According to Reviva Labs, "As the skin ages and loses minerals, it may lose its ability to absorb the benefits of even the finest night creams. To help your night creams live up to their promise" they created Skin Energizing Gel as a "pure catalyst concentrate of mineral and vitamin rich Hawaiian Seaplant." What you will notice is that your skin will become noticeably softer, fresher looking, and very hydrated.

L'Oreal 24HR Infallible Eye Shadows in Smoldering Plum, Liquid Diamond, Bronzed Taupe & Bottomless Java: Review & Swatches

If you are a fan of Armani Eyes To Kill, but can't justify the expense- then L'Oreal Infallible Eye Shadows are a viable option. These richly pigmented loose creamy powder shadows undoubtedly represent a case in which the parent company (L'Oreal) utilizes technologies from one of the companies in their holdings (Giorgio Armani), and the end result is a remarkably high quality drugstore product that greatly resembles the luxury product from which it seeks inspiration.
The pigmentation of these shadows is excellent and buildable, but it is a veritable shimmer-fest, therefore if you are looking for a matte shadow, this is the antithesis of that finish.
Smoldering Plum is a gorgeous cool-toned blackened plum.
Liquid Diamond is a lavender-kissed cool silver.
Bronzed Taupe is a gorgeous bronze-tinged taupe.
Bottomless Java is a rich complex bronzed-brown.

These four colors are really gorgeous, and are quite often on sale. If you are looking for something to wear on New Year's Eve-- you might want to visit the makeup aisle at your local drugstore!

Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal 24hr Eyeshadows in Electric Blue & Barely Branded- Review & Swatches

After much searching I was able to track down two of the new Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal 24hr Eyeshadows in Electric Blue and Barely Branded. It seems that most drugstores are not launching them until January, but CVS seems to have them on display at numerous locations.
Both shades are quite creamy, but Barely Branded has better pigmentation than Electric Blue.
Electric Blue is a really beautiful blackened navy blue shimmer, and Barely Branded is a pale Champagne beige shimmer. I have worn Barely Branded on my lids as a wash of color, but it also makes a lovely base. I have only worn Electric Blue as an eyeliner, and it is quite lovely as such. I'm pleased with both shadows, and getting them on sale was even better!

Fun Last-Minute Drugstore Beauty Finds for the Holidays

When I was walking through the drugstore (actually Walgreens & CVS) I found a few fun Maybelline items that are great to give or keep. If you find yourself short of a few stocking-stuffers- their beauty aisles are filled with all sorts of lovely little surprises that are affordable! You probably won't have to stand in line either!

vbeauté Eye Never Nourishing Repair Eye Crème: Review

I have made no secret of the fact that finding a suitable eye cream has always been somewhat problematic for me. Rich creams, or those filled with occlusives the likes of Mineral Oil and Petrolatum tend to give me milia. Therefore, I have to carefully scrutinize eye cream ingredients before deciding whether or not to risk trying them. When I first perused the list of ingredients used in the vbeauté Eye Never Nourishing Repair Eye Crème, I was reasonably confident that it would not cause milia, but the true test was using it daily for 4-6 weeks that would give me conclusive evidence to either substantiate or refute my assumption. Thankfully, my assumption was correct! Having averted this potential problem (read: disaster), the next issue was whether or not it lived up to the claims made, and of course whether or not it did much for me, specifically.

This eye cream is designed to fight lines, reduce puffiness, reduce dark circles, deliver hydration, and to ostensibly function as an eye lift in a jar.  I don't have lots of pronounced lines, but my fine lines are visibly softened. Generally speaking I am prone to dark circles (a lovely genetic predisposition that I would happily live without), and I tend not to be prone to under eye puffiness. However, I am under an inordinate amount of stress at work these days (working long hours researching and writing and sleeping fewer hours than I'd like) that I find that I am having to deal with puffiness and dark circles-- a whole new low for me. I am also finding that I do need extra hydration in my delicate eye area because it is very cold right now (okay, I realize my definition of cold as a member of the rank and file in Southern California wildly differs from that experienced by those of you who live in climates with real seasons, but it is relative). So the real question is whether or not Eye Never is doing much to relieve my current eye woes, and whether I find this product to be a worthy contender in a world where so many eye creams flood the already over-saturated skincare market? The short answers are yes and yes. I have noticed a remarkable reduction in my dark circles which affords me the luxury of using less concealer so that at least I don't look like a zombie- even if I feel like one. On the unfortunate days when I awaken to the scary sight of under eye puffiness, I notice that this delightful attribute is greatly diminished by this eye cream. Eye Never sinks in quickly and gives my eye area the perfect amount of moisture and hydration to take me from morning to evening with no need to reapply.

DescriptionEye Never® Nourishing Repair Eye Crème, "is like an eyelift in a jar. Overall assessment: This is a really lovely eye cream that addresses a laundry list of concerns, and leaves your delicate eye area depuffed, with reduced dark circles, hydrated, lifted, and generally looking younger and more rested. It did not give me the much dreaded milia, and generally made my eyes look great, and even created the illusion that I was well-rested when I was far from it! It passed my rigorous eye cream test with flying colors. I can't wait to see how it makes my eyes look when I am not under the pressure of a mega work deadline, and get a normal amount of sleep!

vbeauté Rub Off Gentle Facial Exfoliator: Review

vbeauté Rub Off Gentle Facial Exfoliator is an extraordinarily effective, gentle, and refined exfoliator that really gets the job done. As I have mentioned numerous times, my combination skin is both finicky, and at times quite sensitive. Physical exfoliators can cause by skin to crack and peel if they aren't as gentle as they are effective. Large jagged pieces of exfoliating granules easily lacerate the skin leaving it vulnerable to infection and/or general over-processing (either way, it will do your skin no favors). I won't even test these types of exfoliators on my face for the aforementioned reasons. Rub Off, on the other hand, is precisely what a physical exfoliant should be: gentle and effective. After use my skin is clean, fresh and positively glowing. It whisks away dead skin, excessive sebum, as well as blackheads and whiteheads (pesky ones are easily extracted afterward, I have found). My skin never looks or feels over-worked, and it is shockingly radiant after use. As is expected with a good exfoliator, it enables all of my serums and creams to absorb more readily, and allows me to use far less because it increases the efficacy of those products by allowing then to penetrate the skin with considerable ease.
Description: "Rub Off™Gentle Facial Exfoliator whisks away the day's accumulated debris and perhaps those old dull cells you're finished with anyway. This exfoliating cleansing gel also helps to regulate oil, purify, and minimize pores. Exfoliate morning or night. Oil free."
Instructions (AM): "Use daily or 2-3 times as needed. Apply a pearl sized amount of cleanser onto pre-moistened face and neck and gently buff skin using small circular movements. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water."
    Benefits:
    Cleanses
    Exfoliates
    Regulates oil
    Provides antioxidants
    Paraben free
    Fragrance free
    Not tested on animals
    Dermatologist tested

vComplex: "vComplex is a potent Swiss cellular concentrate based on Swiss Alpine Rose Botanical Technology (ARBT), an age-antagonist that helps the skin naturally prevent the cycle of aging. Specific to each formulation, vComplex is designed specifically to stop signs of aging in their tracks… at any age."

    Additional Benefits From:
    Alpine Rose Botanical Technology (Antioxidant)
    Mild Gentle Cleansing Agents (Cleansing)
    Fine exfoliating particles

Ingredients: Aqua (water), Glycerin, Myristic Acid, Polyethylene, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Lauric Acid, Stearic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Ethylhexylglycerin, Cellulose Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Xanthan Gum, Tetrasodium EDTA, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Alcohol, Isomalt, Lecithin, Rhododendron Ferrugineum Leaf Cell Culture Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Lactic Acid.

Overall assessment: Stellar product! One of the very best exfoliators that I have used to date, and that is really saying something if you knew how many I have tried over the years! What until you see what I think about the rest of the vbeauté products!! This is an exceptional line!
