Friday Starts with an F for a Reason...

I have been walking by this sign for a while now, and have to confess that I am confounded by the fact that nobody has removed it, or replaced it with a literate sign. I find it simultaneously objectionable and hilarious, but the context is really the key in the placement of this sign. It is affixed to the wall of a building that houses a university library at a research institution. This is an institution that prides itself on a formidable collection of Nobel Prize winners, and scholars of the highest rank. How then, could such an error be made, let alone posted on campus? My late advisor in grad school, who was an erudite scholar and a refined gentleman, once said that improperly spelled words were offensive to the eyes, and I imagine that this sign would have caused him to close his eyes and shake his head.
While I was very tempted to descend upon this sign armed with a permanent marker, I decided to express myself by editing it on my computer instead. In fact, I thought that my best course of action was to give it the grade that it deserved. Rant over.

    1. To edit the sign? Or to lock me up for thinking about defacing the sign by editing it with a permanent marker? LOL ;-)

  2. This. Is. Hilarious. I, too, find it appalling that this pitiful excuse for official signage actually went to the printer without incident...didn't someone--anyone--proofread it first??!!

    Take care and xo,

  3. This is awesome! You had me laughing. :D
I used to be a copy editor for my campus newspaper so an error like this makes my spine crawl.

(I plead the 5th on errors in my blog comments. My usual commenting diarrhea and fast fingers often produce stupid mistakes.)

    1. Hi Boo!! I'm glad that you got a good laugh!! It drives me nuts each time I walk by this sigh-- which is quite frequent. It's shameful that it was posted at all. This is to say nothing of the rest of the sign, but those errors are more forgivable! Now there are scores of undergrads who now know they "maybe" cited, or "maybe sighted" LOL!!!!!!
