Chantecaille Ultra Sun Protection SPF 50+++ Anti-Glycation Primer Review

I must say, as a new member of the I love Chantecaille club- I approach each new product with considerable excitement. I have yet to be disappointed, and my initiation into the world of their Ultra Sun Protection SPF 50 PA+++ Anti-Glycation Primer was no exception. What a mouthful, try saying that three times fast. I was quite generously given enough samples of this primer to be able to use it for a full month, and after using it for that length of time I can tell you that the formula is amazing.  The texture is like crushed silk and it feels as good on the face as a Hakuhodo brush! It has the wonderful and pleasant smell of roses, but that fades very quickly once applied. I immediately noticed how flawlessly that my foundation or tinted moisturizer applied, and there was no need for reapplication or touch up of my foundation throughout the day (of course it is important to note that sunscreen must be reapplied in order to remain protected from the sun). The thing that I was most worried about was not using another sunscreen in order to test the merits of the sun protection factor of this primer- this seems risky given that we are in the midst of a Los Angeles summer. I am pleased to report that I had nothing to be concerned about- as it turns out it boasts a pretty magnificent sunscreen.

According to Chantecaille: "The oil-free texture beautifully smooths skin and controls oil-breakthrough and shine throughout the day. Chantecaille make up artists find that the fluid perfectly preps skin and extends the wear of Future Skin Foundation. Water and humidity-resistant, it is perfect daily protection for outdoor activities and humid climates."

This truly invisible shield delivers comprehensive UV protection: SPF 50 for UVB and PA+++ for UVA.
- The formula contains a combination of three highly effective, broad spectrum UV filters.
- Cherry blossom, lemon balm, and white tea extracts deliver powerful anti-inflammatory properties, protecting DNA from free radicals
- Carnosine, an effective and well-known anti-glycation ingredient, ensures that skin is protected from the internal threat of sugar glycation (a process that breaks down collagen)
- Paraben-free
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE 7.5% (OCTINOXATE), ETHYLHEXYL SALICYLATE 5% (OCTISALATE), BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE 3% (AVOBENZONE)
INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, ROSA DAMASCENA FLOWER WATER, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, POLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE, ISONONYL ISONONANOATE, METHYL METHACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, ETHYLHEXYL SALICYLATE, GLYCERIN, BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE, VINYL DIMETHICONE/METHICONE SILSESQUIOXANE CROSSPOLYMER, DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE, PENTYLENE GLYCOL, POLYGLYCERYL-6 POLYRICINOLEATE, TETRASODIUM EDTA, TOCOPHEROL, MELISSA OFFICINALIS LEAF EXTRACT, STEARYL GLYCYRRHETINATE, CARNOSINE, LECITHIN, CAMELLIA SINENSIS LEAF EXTRACT, CYCLODEXTRIN, [CITRONELLOL, GERANIOL, EUGENOL, CITRAL, FARNESOL, LINALOOL]

Application: Apply daily over moisturizer and before makeup application for smooth, protected skin.

Overall assessment: This is a very lovely primer, and I can think of nothing negative to say about the product itself. However, the price will understandably be prohibitively expensive for most people. That said, it is one of the loveliest primers that I have ever tried! I would most definitely suggest getting a sample and trying it before making the investment. Before I commit to buying the full sized tube I will try my generous samples of Peau Vierge (LMdB)- then I will come to a decision.

    1. Hi Miss L-- Yes it's an amazing product, but the price is very daunting!!

  2. I have eyed this up before and it really does sound good from your review. I think the sunscreens put me off though as I am better with Zinc or titanium. Its good that you have found a new love, we always like the expensive things, don't we?! ;) x

    1. It is quite lovely, Replica. I'm still not sure that I am willing to spend that much on a primer/sunscreen. I am now sampling LMdB Peau Vierge-- which is quite nice, but even more expensive!! I do tend to prefer Zinc and Titanium based sunscreens as a general rule. In the chemical vs. physical sunscreens battle I have opted for the physical variety for years. This is the wonderful thing about getting samples-- once can really get a feel for the product without going into deep debt!! :-) xo

  3. Oh Chantecaille, you do slay us with your lovely things at big prices.

I didn't like this as much as the Firming Sun Cream - I found the primer felt a bit too silicone-y for my preference. Not that the Chantecaille Firming Sun Cream is much cheaper :D

    1. As do I slay myself, Grace!! I really like the way this one feels-- though you are quite right that there is a silicone-y thing going on here-- which certainly in part accounts for its velvety texture. I just finished up my samples and am now testing out LMdB Peau Vierge. I'm going to have to add Chantecaille Firming Sun Cream to my list to sample!! Thanks for the lead on that one! xoxox

  4. Loved this product but the chemicals used for sunscreen protection are an unstable combo. My dermatologist would not approve it for sunscreen use (as someone who has had skin cancer in the past, I am VERY careful). As a primer, it's excellent but too costly for just that purpose. *sigh* On to the next SS.

    1. Wow, thank you so much for that very valuable information! Interestingly my dermatologist suggested Cerave-AM SPF 30-- he said it was what he used, and not to ever walk out of the house without an SPF 30 on. It is too expensive as a primer alone. I already have had a few "pre-pre" cancerous spots removed- I am very vigilant about anything that could even have the most remote possibility of becoming cancerous-- so I made him remove everything that looked as though it could possibly one day go bad. Again, thank you for the very valuable tip! :-)

  5. Oooh this looks like a gorgeous product--SPF AND primer? Love it! But, don't love the price tag. $85 for a primer? Eeps!

    1. I know-- it's very expensive, but read the comment above by Anonymous- who was told that the chemicals used are an unstable combination-- so it wasn't approved by her or his dermatologist. Then it is a really lovely and super expensive primer- which will be even harder to justify for most people. Grae London was saying that the Chantecaille Firming Sun Cream is quite lovely-- though again it will be quite expensive. :-(

  7. Oh, I've heard great things about this. I'll probably stick to my Hourglass Veil Mineral for eternity but wouldn't mind straying over to test this some day. :D

I have used up my samples, and think that I now won't buy it-- plus it is quite expensive. I love the Hourglass Veil Mineral-- it's an exquisite product! xx

    1. Hi Facundo,

I am not a doctor and have absolutely no idea whether this product contains ingredients that are considered harmful during pregnancy. I would consult your OB/GYN and perhaps Chantecaille. I would also check to see if this list of ingredients is still the same for this product since this review is already 2 years old. I have no idea whether or not the product has added or removed ingredients during the time of my review and now. I certainly would not risk using something without talking to my doctor first while pregnant. Congratulations!!!!!
