Chantecaille Iridescent Eye Shade in Sel is a gorgeous and creamy soft eye shadow that is quite possibly the perfect shade of taupe! It has a refined iridescence quality rather than overt sparkle or glitter. It is a sheerer formula that is quite buildable, and it is excellently pigmented and silky smooth. There is no fallout whatsoever, and it is simply delightful to use. The formula is quite forgiving on the eyelids and will be flattering on the skin of all age ranges. I'm also very pleased that Chantecaille sells the refill pans so you can save $8.00 off the bat, and place it into a palette. Be forewarned, as is the case with Rouge Bunny Rouge-- once you open the door there is no turning back with Chantecaille!

Overall assessment: Extraordinarily high quality eye shadow that it stunningly gorgeous, and a pleasure to use. I delayed buying anything from Chantecaille because I knew that to try it ultimately meant that I would be adding another luxury brand into my stash (I was right). There is much more Chanatecaille in my future. Next on my list: Meteorite and Tanzanite eye shadows!

Do you love Chantecaille? What was your "gateway" product that got you hooked?

$22.00 .08oz 2.5g from Chantecaille, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys and Bloomingdale's. I bought mine from Nordstrom online.

  1. This is absolutely beautiful! I've been keeping my eyes open for a good taupe to buy once my current one is gone, and this may just be the one.

    1. I agree, Sarsie-- but even more so in person!! You might also want to look at Chantecaille Granite and Meteorite- they are also in the taupe family as well. Meteorite is quite a bit darker, and Granite is a bit darker than Sel as well. The quality is simply superb!

    2. Thank you so much for the other color recommendations! I looked up swatches, and they look lovely as well. When I'm ready to replace my other taupe, I'll go check them all out in person. So excited. :)

    3. You are so very welcome, Sarsie! Aren't those other colors ridiculously gorgeous?! If you haven't already stalked the swatches on Karla Sugar's blog- you really should-- they are drool worthy! I totally agree-- you should swatch them in person and then decide. Don't accidentally throw your current taupe across the room to speed up the process! LOL!! It's nice that we can buy the refill pans to save some extra money! :-)

  3. OK, I'm wearing this tomorrow. I need to go through my Chantecaille. Finally something you've made me want that I don't have to go buy!!

    1. YAY!! Shopping your own stash is the best kind of guilt-free shopping!! Do you have Tanzanite? If so, do you love it? I seem to remember Zuzu saying that it was your all-time favorite purple eye shadow. It's on my "want" list (along with Meteorite and Granite).

    2. Tanzanite is my favorite ever purple eyeshadow. I like wearing it with Quartz which is sort of mauvey. Those are two shadows I've bought several times.
Granite is a beauty too. I don't remember if I have Meteorite but it's possible because I have a lot of Chantecaille including the original palettes.

    3. That's what I thought!! I hope that you do a Chantecaille eye shadow post!! I'd love to see your stash and swatches!! I definitely want Meteorite (which I'm hoping that you have- because it's so gorgeous!). I fear that I'm starting to obsess on Chantecaille the same way that I do on RBR!!

  5. I'm interested in trying more of the Chantecaille eyeshadow so this review is really useful. I wish it was easier to find the refill pans in the UK (you know how I like to depot!), apparently you can get them but nowhere online. This is bad news for a lazy bones like me ;) x

    1. I'm so glad that you found this review useful, Jane! They are such lovely shadows! I really do think that they are of the same quality as RBR! Zuzu is really our resident Chantecaille expert, and has amassed quite a collection (though it looks as though she's purging some at her upcoming blog sale as well). Now that your ban has been lifted you might find yourself in some trouble with Chantecaille! :-) It's not that easy to find the refill pans in stores in the US either- I bought mine online. I went and swatched at a Chantecaille counter and then ordered the pan online. I will do that with the others that I get as well! It certainly makes no sense to spend the money on the packaging- particularly if you depot as we do!

  6. I haven't yet given into my desire to try out Chantecaille... This was definitely one of the colours that interested me the most, though (not that I need another taupe shadow, ever). This just tempts me more...

    1. I held back for quite a while as well, Kate-- but I finally gave into my urges. I ordered Sel, and one lip gloss, but as you can well imagine my list of wants is longer than my list of haves! This is a delightful shade- as are Meteorite and Granite (both of which are in the taupish family as well). If you cave and get something- I can't wait to hear what you think!! How hard is it to find the refill pans in Canada?

  8. Yup. This is firmly on my Christmas list.
I'll have to tell someone other than my fiancé, as we recently purchased a large teak MCM mirror as our Christmas present to each other. It's gorgeous!

    1. You definitely need Sel, BooBoo! OMG- your mirror sounds amazing!! I'd love to see it-- send me an email with a picture, if you have time! I'm dying to see what you got--I'm so excited for you!

    2. For sure. :) I'll gladly show off my Craigslist find with you. That's part of the fun! The CL ad is no longer up so I don't have any photos at hand. I'll either take photos outside tomorrow (indoor photos will not do it justice) or completely forget (in which case you'll have to remind me). The third scenario is that I'll remember to take photos but forget to email you. Heh heh. :D

    3. Ooooh I can't wait!! If you forget I will remind you! There's nothing better than a good Craigslist find! xx

  9. This shade really looks gorgeous. Thanks to your comment up above for luring to me to check out their other shades on KarlaSugar! lol...I haven't purchased anything from this brand yet. I remember being tempted to buy their lip gloss, but as I've told you before I have too many glosses, which reminds me I finally received my RBR goodies from BeautyHabit just yesterday and so far I'm loving everything I got. Thanks for your reviews! ;)
Anyways I was actually thinking of making a purchase from Chantecaille after I saw the eyeshadow quad they will be releasing for the Fall just because I'm a sucker for elephants. I know it sounds silly, but I understand part of the purchase goes to charity so it helps me not feel too bad for wanting to get it regardless of the colors. Now you got me wanting to try some of their single eyeshadows! Grr, but I'm reminding myself to wait for Burberry's new eyeshadow quads and also the new single shades they will be adding for the Fall. Thankfully yesterday at Nordstroms I talked myself out of buying anything from Chanel's Fall collection....at least I think so for now! lol

    1. I suspect that if/when you cave and try something from Chantecaille that you will find the quality in keeping with Burberry. I still haven't caved on Burberry-- but your suggestions of Rosewood, Midnight Brown, and Pale Barley have been gnawing away at me!! LOL! The new Chantecaille elephants palette does look lovely, and there's no doubt that it's easier to justify because of the cute elephant imprint and that a portion of the proceeds go to charity (so, no- it doesn't sound silly at all!).

I'm soooo excited that you got your Beautyhabit RBR package-- I can't wait to hear what you think!

What self-restraint that you didn't cave on any of the Chanel Fall collection at Nordstrom yesterday! I ordered Troublant online after trying my sister's-- and I love it. However, I passed on Caractere. I am going to Nordstrom today, and will look at the Anniversary Sale exclusives (Fleur de Lotus), but suspect that all of it will be too warm for me. I am interested in Rose Initiale though-- but I realize that I need another pink Chanel Joues Contraste blush like I need a hole in the head!

I can't wait to see the new Burberry euye shadow quads and singles when they launch.

BTW-- I bought a Chantecaille lip gloss (review either going up today or tomorrow)-- I hate to tell you this, Naomi-- it's fantastic, and the color is perfect for you as well. If you like the SR lipglosses.... xoxoL

  10. Oh Lola! Nooooooooo!!! I just bought 3 lip glosses from RBR. I must resist buying another lip gloss! You posted the exact shade of gloss that I have fought many times not to purchase!!! Your swatches look divine. Grrr, think I'm gonna have to start sending your email post to the spam box! LOL!
Of course I wouldn't do such a thing, your blog is too lovely, but it sure does cause my credit card some trouble ;)
Love & Charm were the 2 exact shades I had eyed in the past. They look very dupeable, but I bet the quality is every bit as luxurious as you describe it making it worth every penny! Think I'm gonna have to throw in those 2 shades in now when I buy the Chantecaille elephant quad.

PS I notice on twitter you were trying to find out if Burberry Beauty is CF, I will try to find out what I can for you. I know their clothing line is not, but I'm praying it's not true with the cosmetic line. Can't believe I forgot to look into that :'(

    1. Hi Naomi!! You know- I thought of you when I added that lip gloss to my basket-- realizing that it might cause you to want it-- given that we share the same taste, and that we both have the same affliction with lip gloss!!!

It might save you some $$ if you SPAM me-- LOL!!!! I'm not sure how to SPAM myself-- because I manage to get myself to want too many things!

Charm will be mine-- as I suspect that Love and Charm will be yours. At least they aren't limited edition-- so there really is no need to rush-- other than or shared compulsion of WANTING THEM!!

It's definitely a formula thing-- the color is not unique-- despite the fact that it is gorgeous. The price is definitely high, but the more that I try Chantecaille- the more that I realize how phenomenal the line is. I want to try the tinted moisturizer very badly now!

Thanks about trying to find out about whether or not Burberry is CF-- I knew that there clothing wasn't, but I suspect that either their makeup is not CF-- or it's in that greyer area where they don't, but have a third party do it. When I sent them an email it took them a while to respond and when they did they were a little evasive. xx

  11. What a lovely colour! I love when companies do refillables. While beautiful packaging can be very enticing, it's also quite wasteful.

    1. It really is a gorgeous shade, and a lovely first introduction into the world of Chantecaille eye shadows for me! I agree-- I wish that everyone who do refillables! I would by far prefer spend my money on the product, rather than on the packaging-- which really is so wasteful!
