Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Twilight Night Shimmer Ink- Review & Swatches

I have long held that Bobbi Brown makes excellent gel eyeliners, and have collected a well-edited collection of them over the last few years. I love the texture, the saturation, the ease with which they apply, and their staying power. They are mighty little gems in a sweet little glass pot.
I had not planned on picking up the newest limited edition Long-wear Gel Eyeliner, Twilight Night Shimmer Ink #30, but when my sister and I saw it twinkling at us at the Bobbi Brown counter the other day-- we both caved.
I would describe the color as something along the lines of a deep blackened purple with multi-colored micro-glitter. It is complex and stunningly gorgeous. Bobbi Brown describes it as a "Black plum & golden pearl," but I think that is more complex than that. In fact, it is so gorgeous and unique that I can't even think of a suitable dupe. In my opinion this is by far the prettiest Gel Eyeliner that Bobbi Brown has done to date, and I really think that it should be part of the permanent collection. Interestingly online it is not designated as a limited edition release, but the MUA at the Bobbi Brown counter assured us that it was indeed limited edition.
As you can see from all of the photos, there is a chameleon-like complexity to this shade. The color modulates depending on the lighting-- I therefore took lots of outdoor pictures to try to capture it.

Overall assessment: I love Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliners to begin with, but Twilight Night Shimmer Ink definitely kicks it up a notch! That said, if you favor matte eyeliner gels then this will likely be a pass for you. However, if you are a fan of Bobbi Brown gel eyeliners and love a little bit of twinkle- then this is a definite winner. This is not a glitter bomb- instead it offers a gorgeous shimmer.

  3. Love the depth here, I'd be tempted to use it as an eye base too.

    1. I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!! It would make a gorgeous base!!!! The depth is exquisite, and frankly no matter how many pictures I take they simply don't do this luscious shade justice!

    1. Hi Gummy! Yes, and it's even more gorgeous in person!! I agree- I love how the sparkle does a little peek-a-boo game. I would definitely recommend going and swatching it to see if it really speaks to you, but I suspect that it will :-)

  6. I have been trying to resist this particular one because as of late, I have not been using my gel liners at all and they are sitting, collecting dust in my stash. But this new shade is making me want to create all kinds of cat-eye flicks and thick lines to show off the gorgeous shimmer! I WANT!! And yes, Bobbi makes the BEST gel liners, hands down.

    1. Hi Becca, I almost walked away from it for the very same reason!! I haven't been using my BB gel liners lately either! However when my sister bought it without any hesitation I caved within about a minute. Not because I needed it, but because I knew that every time I saw her wear it that I would kick myself for not getting it! It is so much more interesting than any of the other gel liners that I have. I say at least go swatch it to see if you "need" it! xx

  8. BB has beautiful, wearable colours and while I'm a fan of the long-wearing shadows, I have not tried the liners. I think you and your sister made a good call! ;)

    1. I agree. I have been using her gel eyeliners for years, and haven't find one that I like better yet. This color is magnificent-- I'm really glad that we both picked it up. Better than me drooling over hers, wishing that I had gotten it- but then finding that I was too late. I hope that this does so well that she makes it part of the permanent collection!

  9. I've been reading your blog off and on for awhile and this is my first comment. Twilight is such a delightful color. I typically stick to black eye liner only, but this I could picture myself wearing. I could see being able to use it in lots of different looks and not have it scream that I'm wearing colored liner. I'm debating between picking up either a BB gel liner or a Laura Mercier cake liner. Not sure which would be better, but I think either would be better then liquid liner.

    1. Hi RileyMariesMom! I'm so glad that you decided to leave a comment! This really is a delightful color-- I generally stick to back or nearly black liners as well (for my upper lid- I do sometimes venture into olive green or purples in my lower lash line)-- so this was a little out of my normal comfort zone, but I have to say that it is very flattering on, and it doesn't scream purple or sparkly. I have a good selection of BB gel liners and this one has quickly become my favorite. I have one Laura Mercier cake liner in Mahogsny Brown, and love it enough that I have hit the pan! They are so different that I can't say that I prefer one to the other though. I feel like I have ample control with both, and they are quite forgiving when a little correction is needed. I have only one liquid liner-- from MAKE UP FOR EVER, and while I like it-- I am much more comfortable using the gel or cake versions. Liquid liners are so much less forgiving of mistakes for me. I am a big fan of a winged liner and the BB gel and the LM cake liner both work beautifully for me. Let me know which you end up getting- and what you think of it. I would recommend trying both at the counters-- even if only on your arm to see which feels better to you. You do have to be careful to remember to really close the BB lid tightly, and I was told to store it upside down-- otherwise they can dry out. My sister didn't adequately tighten the lid on her last one, and it has now hardened/. Have a lovely weekend!
