Red Lips, Anyone?

Source
This is for my friend Zuzu*s Petals (from Everyday Beauty)- not only to celebrate her love of blue-based red lipsticks, but also to make a visual response to the question she posed in her most recent article. In  "Wearing Red Lipstick...Do You?" she asked whether her readers wore red lipstick- so for a girl who has often feared red lipsticks I made the discovery that I had quite a few in my stash. Therefore, I have selected some of my favorite red lipsticks, lip glosses, and Lip Butters to show you. I have found that all of the lipsticks look phenomenal blotted down and used as a stain- if one is looking for training wheels in wearing red lipstick (which is precisely what I do!). I varied the lighting in order for you to get a better idea of the true color of each shade. The lip glosses and the lip butters prove to be a fool proof way to wear red as they are very easily sheered out or built up- depending on your mood.
Lipsticks:
1) Susan Thompson Cosmetics: Creamy Lipstick in Joplin (a gorgeous classic blue-based red)
2) Sunday Riley Modern Lip Color: American Rose Lipstick (a dark and rich blue-based red)
3) MAKE UP FOR EVER: Rouge Artist Intense #45 (blue-based satin raspberry red)
4) MAKE UP FOR EVER: Rouge Artist Intense in Moulin Rouge #43 (a satin vibrant red)
5) MAC: Unknown Pleasures (Mattene from Posh Paradise- LE) ( a deep intense blue-based red)
Lip Glosses:
1) Chanel: Glossimer in Spark (raspberry red with shimmer)
2) MAKE UP FOR EVER: Lab Shine Lip Gloss M10 (Morello Cherry with fuchsia and ruby shimmer)
3) LORAC: Bejeweled Lip Gloss Collection Red Ruby (gorgeous blue based ruby red)
4) Susan Thompson Cosmetics: Pout Poppers in Evelyn's Journey (a reddened burgundy plum with gold flecks)
Lip Butters:
1) Revlon: Colorburst Lip Butter in Red Velvet #40 (a deep blue-based red)
2) Revlon: Colorburst Lip Butter in Cherry Tart #70 (a mid-toned blue-based red)

If you simultaneously love and fear red, then lip glosses and lip butters are a really nice way to get your feet wet!

  1. Wonderful swatches! I have a ton of red lipsticks but, strangely, none of these. Although I'm usually more of a lipstick girl, the glosses look really nice. Would probably be a good option for summer when heavy red lips can be a bit much.

    1. Thanks, Kate!! Which red lipsticks do you have, and which are your favorites? I agree that these red glosses are a good option for summer when the heavy and intense red lipstick may not be the best choice (though I do know a few people who wear intense red lipstick every season!

    2. I have way more than any person with only one mouth should ever have, but it's like I can't resist them... I don't even like to think about favourites... Chanel's Dragon, until it was discontinued. Rouge d'Armani 404 from their holiday collection a couple of years back. Too Faced Drop Dead Red. Chanel Famous. I tend to gravitate towards cooler reds (and dark ones, although that's a whole different category to me), but I also adore Hourglass Raven, which is red on the edge of orange... Would you believe I don't own a single MUFE red? It seems like there's sixty of them!

    3. Dragon is so GORGEOUS-- for the life of me I cannot figure out why Chanel discontinued it!! What a lovely assortment that you have!! I, too, gravitate toward the cooler reds- yellow based and orange reds look hideous on my cool skin! Oh, the dark ones are sublime, and I totally agree that they are in a separate category altogether! have never swatches Raven, but I suspect that the orange in it would not work well for me. MUFE has some really lovely reds- and it does seem as though there are quite a few!!

  2. An excellent collection of reds! Loved that you included Chanel's Spark...that particular color was my very first Glossimer; I can still remember buying it and wearing it out one night when I was in college. It is funny the things we remember so clearly: )

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks! That's so funny that Spark was for first Glossimer! I can just imagine the college memories evoked by the sight of Spark. It's really such a classic Chanel shade. It is funny what memories can be triggered by something like a lip gloss!

I hope that you have a great weekend too! xo

  3. Awesome, dear lola, thank you! Crazily, the only items I own from your red collection are Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Cherry Tart and Chanel Glossimer in Spark.

Spark is an odd duck. It looks so bronze in the tube. I had seen it swatched online and bought it, but when I got it home and took it out of the box, I thought they had made a mistake, but no. Somehow that brown-looking lip gloss transforms into the shimmery raspberry red you described.

I really don't care for lip gloss, but I have slowly acknowledged that Chanel and NARS have won my heart.

Thank you so much for your article. I can never get enough red comparison swatches.

    1. You are so welcome, Zu!

Spark is such an odd duck- I was pretty sure that I would hate it based upon how it looked in the tube, but it really is such a lovely raspberry red on the lips. Cherry Tart is also a lovely shade.

I know that you don't like lip glosses, but Chanel and NARS are most certainly worthy of your love!!

      Have a great weekend! xo

  4. I rarely wear red lipstick. I've only bought one or two in my life. The ones I do have and use occasionally are ones I've blogged about. I do have a beautiful red gloss from MAC though that I like since it's sheer enough to add the color without making my lips look like little bleeding slits.
If I had that models lips I'd be thrilled to wear red.

    1. I know just what you mean, Marcia! I definitely tend to use training wheels when wearing red. If I had thick and juicy lips like that the model has I'd be thrilled to wear it full impact as well!!
